    John (or other interested party)

Are you still involved in helping Americans get enrolled in UNISA, or are you only working through your new venture (I think it is Continental???)

My question is about my wife's enrollment with UNISA. If you are still working on these types of things, then I can work via email, or here if you and/or other would prefer it. It might be useful for anyone interested in registering with UNISA.

    anyway, let me know, please

Clint, you may remember the long dialogue that went on in late October on Continental & UNISA. I think we finisihed it off with John C still saying that he represents UNISA, and that the student enrols as a Continental student examined by UNISA. Continental it seems was operatiing with one phone line & no staff. There are tons of UNISA reps around the world, and from other posters here they seemed to be having problems with slow communication between UNISA.

    Anyway, call Continental and see if they will enrol your wife (assuming she is resident inthe USA) or contact a european agent from the list at;

and the posted link for reference previously was.

My understanding is that the agency (www.aihec.com), which provides help for the student wishing to avoid the bureaucratic stonewall of dealing with UNISA, is completely separate from Continental, which can dually enroll the student in UNISA.

Certainly this is an option. However, it is quite a maze trying to figure out what paperwork (transcripts, marriage licence, etc) you need to send, when to send it, where to send it, etc.

I just wanted some guidance in this regard. If I can't find anyone to help me satisfactorily, then I will go at it alone. Just trying to make it as easy as possible.

Thanks for the other links, etc. I will have a look at them.

The fact is, you CAN enroll directly with UNISA. The problem is that the directions for doing so are somewhat difficult to decipher. IMOHO they are not THAT difficult (I consider it to be a sort of entrance examination) but there are a selection of organizations that have been established to assist people in this regard. I tell myself that these have been set up because UNISA draws people from across the globe and it is difficult to establish application guidelines that seem equally sensible to everyone on the planet. BTW, the one in Canada seems helpful.

The fact is that you can enrol directly with UNISA, it can be a nightmare, communication via email sucks, probably because of the volume of enquires and SA probably have the by the minute charge for IP time. Other posters having gone this route have found it easier to phone UNISA, and some have gone the Agent route as stated in this thread.

Javad a poster on DL went the agent route in Canada, and yes it was faster, you see UNISA's smart maketing have set up the agents to field the applicants, deal with local country issues, and for this a small fee goes to the agents. This saves UNISA hiring staff..my guess anyway.

Hi. The Agent in Canada was very nice on the phone and replied to my emails quickly. However, he is out there to make a $ for himself. He basically reviewed my application forms + my documents and after a minor correction, he sent them to UNISA and pocketed $100.

In a way the $100 guaranteed my application would not be returned for corrections/additional documents. BUT, one thing that I was not told by the UNISA agent and later found out myself was the fact that UNISA's computer science department is quite small and many PhD research topics are not accepted because UNISA does not the resources to supervise/advise them.

Also, most universities want you to communicate your research interests to their graduate dept. first. And then to submit the formal registration forms. As per the Dean of CS dept. at UNISA, this is also true for UNISA, but their Agent in Canada wanted me to go through him... ofcouse for the $. He also said in his email (which I still have) I do not need to travel to SA. He said travel to SA would be a very rare request. But, the Dean of the CS dept. said otherwise. So go figure.

    Regards,
    J.

Good point. However, my wife's work will be in an undergraduate field, so no problem with this stuff. I really don't think it will be that big of a deal, I just wanted to get some clarification on a few issues. Anyway, I appreciate all of the advice and comments.

    later,

    Clint,

I have been off in India for a couple of weeks. After a bit of jet-lag I am back on the board here.

Feel free to write to me at [email protected] and I will be happy to help.

    Thanks for thinking of me.
