Wittfield University is a NO NO... Avoid it like a plague! Stick with regionally accredited or Government recognized academic institutions.

Stick with accredited or equivalent of accredited.

If you want universities with low tuition then check out the University of Zululand. There is a guy here doing a PhD in some sort of computer/theology combination that has involved both departments.

Tuition for a research PhD is less than 2000 US dollars for the entire program.

Nobody has mentioned Nova which offers specific IT related Ph.D. degrees in CS, CIS, IS, Ed. Tech, and Info. Science (Librarians). Most of the work is done at a distance with some short residency required at the main campus. Check out: http://scis.nova.edu/Admissions/index.html and just http://scis.nova.edu/

The Walden, Touro, and Capella Ph.D. degree programs are business/management Ph.D.s with an IT related specialization or concentration. For example,

Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences from Walden
where you can apply a specialization is Information Systems Management.

The Ph.D. from Capella is through the School of Business and also provides a Technology Management specialization.

    Similar specializations through Touro.

So, it comes down to what you want. In contrast Nova's Ph.D. are in their Graduate School of Computer and Information Sciences with the programs in the specific IT fields.

What you need to do is carefully look at each program and decide what is best for you?

I found a few links of professors in the US teaching with PhDs from USQ. In Canada, USQ degrees are recognized for engineering and accounting licenses.

You may not get what you pay for

North: "Tuition for a research PhD is less than 2000 US dollars for the entire program."

In the words of an American tennis player: "you can't be serious!"

If you are - and you recommend this institution as a reputable university and its degrees as worthy of the name - then its no wonder that DL is having such a hard time getting recognised and so many cons and scams proliferate around the fringes.

Recruit 50 students for these 'research PhDs' and bank $100,000 a year. With the usual rate of drop outs and their replacements, a 'university' must be able to mint it, but what original contributions to knowledge they provide is problematical.

The university want the bucks, and the student wants the parchment - good business:D

Most research doesn't do anything other than gather dust, so therein lies the problem..

Some of us however are doing it for other reasons, and which to answer a question and make an original contribution to knowledge. Fortunately some other universities also have standards in this area, and THAT really is how the pecking order works.

I'll settle for the rigour thanks, and the respect that qualifying from my alma mater provides.

It is not always the case. It depends if the university gets government subsidies or not. In Canada, you can get a PhD from McGill University for only 4K US dollars (Residential of course). My guess is that some SA universities haven't realized that they are subsidizing international students as well. It is very likely that if they start getting tons of american students then they will charge more for international students. The same thing happened in Canada, for many years universities didn't have international fees, it was because of the high demand of american students that things changed.

Bill Grover is enrolled at UNIZUL doing a research ThD and has found it rigorous in terms of what his faculty mentor demands from him. He can comment more.

UNIZUL cost is not out of line for South African research PhD's thanks in part to the fact they are public, the exchange rate, and that they have not yet decided to significantly boost the cost to Western students. They may catch on an decide to jack up the foreign tuition.

If you are from India and looking for a MBA you have an option www.ptuonline.com (cost about Rs.7000 / semester)
If not you can always try University of Southern Queensland for a recognised DBA.

Contact the UNIZUL dept. you are interested in and discuss your interest in doing a research PhD, what your specific interest is, and whether any on campus time is required. Research degrees by their nature *can* be completed by DL. Whether a particular dept or faculty will work with you is not a certainty. From what has been posted here on Aussie, S. African, & British schools it often depends on who you are talking to and whether that person has an interest in your specific area rather than a hard and fast rule.

As I said, a member is doing their research PhD in some sort of computer field through DL via UNIZUL.

For other schools you will need to contact the particular dept. at the school. Look at the South African Gov't web site under the ed dept and start at the top of the school list.

    Good luck!
