NEW DELHI: The first Indian campus of an American university opened classes Monday, promising to bring world class education and infrastructure to Indian students.

Delhi chief minister Shiela Dikshit inaugurated the campus of the Western International University (WIU), the Modi Apollo International Institute (MAII), set up by the Modi group in alliance with the US based Apollo International at an initial cost of $2 million.

The institute would seek to provide international education at an affordable price for those who seek colleges abroad, said Ramaswamy Aiyar, Professor Emeritus, MAII and a former director of the Indian Institute of Management Kolkata.

It gives students an opportunity to take affordable US affiliated degrees in India," Aiyar said.

The institution would offer an international curriculum adapted to local needs and customized for Indian realities, he added.

The curriculum would be globally focused, yet locally relevant.

Western International University's MBA program offered at MAII includes the Master of Business Administration in Management, Master of Business Administration in IT and the Foundational Bridge in Management.

The campus is located in south Delhi's Lajpat Nagar neighborhood.

According to WIU president Michael J Seiden, the institute would provide degrees identical to the degrees awarded by his institute in the US

"In a world that is becoming more and more connected through advanced communications and Internet and where businesses frequently cross international boundaries, a strong business and technology education is a powerful tool for building a successful career," Seiden pointed out.

WIU is based in Phoenix, Arizona. Its degrees are accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Schools and Colleges (NCA) of the US

According to Modi group officials, the boardroom size classes of the Indian campus would offer an atmosphere for the creation of future management heads and offer rigorous internships with the promise of placements.

There will be courses for full time students as well as working people, who would attend classes twice a week and during weekends.

None of this will come cheap.

An MBA degree would cost Rs 245,000 ($5000.00) a year. But the Modi institute says the cost would be offset in some cases by a special scholarship of Rs 50,000.

OK, Manjunath, but only if Sheila Dikshit hasn't changed her name from, uh, Gdansk. MiGS over Delhi would be a sad sight!

    Its a RA MBA for $5k !!

  4. WIU is a small sister of U. Phoenix. Sperling bought it to squash competition in UoP's home town.

Manjunath, yeah, yeah, seriously, it sounds like a good program. Do US degrees in business carry an added prestige value in India?
How would you rank the esteem in which some of the major Indian universities are held by Indians?

US universities like these (WIU or UOP) will never add prestige value in india in comparision to IIM's (Indian institute of Management's).
Even to get an admission to their program one has to pass a rigorous CAT (Common admission test) followed by Group by Discussions and a personal interview. IIM's are some of the best in the world.
One has to be really good to get into these institutes.

Thanks, Manjunath. The links were interesting. I know nothing about MBA programs or whether programs in one country had an edge in reputation over those in another.
Brains before beauty: IIM must have the ugliest buildings of any university anywhere!
