Ok, Board, I really need your help on this one. I have a friend who is interested in getting a degree in Architecture and/or Design and would like to do some or most of it through distance learning if possible. He would at least like to get started this way. I do not know much about this field so it was very hard for me to give him advice.

He lives in NC and may be interested in certification or being licensed if this is even possible in this field. He is already a general contractor and has that license but is very interested in the above as far as completing a degree. Any help on degree programs, distance learning, certifications, and licensing would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Architecture is a field that hasn't fit well in to DL. Historically, the field has focused on face to face instruction - with lengthy studio sessions. If you are looking for an accredited (that is NCARB/NAAB) I'm certain you won't find one.

If your friend wants to be licensed as an architect this is a real limitation.

    Regards - Andy

Perhaps this fits with Andys post. BG14 lists only a few (all Australian) postgraduate degree programs in architecture.

Your friend should check out his state's requirements for licensesure -- Some states accept a degree in civil engineering as part of their license provisions. A DL BS in Civil engineering is availavle from University North Dakota:

A CE degree will open more doors than an architechure degree and for most people will pay more.
