When a school asks for an outline and idea for a research proposal, is it appropiate to pitch more than one idea?

Or will multiple ideas suggest you are not focused and that you're not quite ready for doctorate level research?

    Thanks.

What I have done is to state quite clearly that I have a number of interests that might translate well into research projects (theses/dissertations) and then I present one. The one that I present would be the one that has the best combination of two factors, 1) it's interesting to me and 2) it appears to be at least somewhat related to the stated research interest of at least one faculty member (remember, the school has to feel that they can "support" your research). Then I make some sort of vague statement about how I understand that there needs to be a good "fit" between student and faculty interests and that I would be prepared to modify my area of interest accordingly (or some sort of tripe like that). A good friend has advised me that your dissertation need not be your lifes work or burning passionate interest. You just need to be interested enough to finish it. Good luck,
    Jack
