I have done a search on the forum about the University of London and I have done a search on their website. But the questions that I still have is:

    1) What is the total costs for a program. I am looking at two different ones. The one in theology and the one in English. The website says the theology program is 110 pounds per unit for examinations. Registration is 268 plus continuing registration is 128 pounds. I don't understand all that...could somebody explain it all to me or point me to a site that would explain total cost of program. Plus the website said this...

***Besides the fees payable to the University, you should budget for the cost of purchasing textbooks (this may well be in the region of £300 per year); the cost of any course or tuition you may or (for the Diploma) are required to take and the fee levied by your local examination centre to cover their costs***

That is just for the theology degree. The link for the English program is http://www.londonexternal.ac.uk/undergraduate/english/fees.shtml

    Can anybody explain this.

    2) My second question is what is the pros and cons of this program?

    Thank you

Hi Drew - I'm not a U of L expert but I might be able to clarify a couple of things. Assuming the costs you've quoted are the most current, then the costs are exactly what you just quoted. Seems too simple? Seems like too little money? That's because there is no instruction offered. You get the course materials (books, syllabus, etc) and you slog through it on your own. When you think you're ready you take the exam (there are often other assignments such as essays as well), then you take the exam (although you can only take exams at prescribed times and places). The exams are reputed to be difficult so you really have to work at the course material. The pros and cons of such a degree program are fairly self-evident. If you're bright and very motivated then you can probably get a quality degree for very little money. If you're looking for an easy degree, you'll probably get clobbered. I believe that I've gotten all that right but if I've missed something perhaps someone will be good enough to provide the corrections. Good luck,
    Jack

You can email the people at UofL and they will write back, explaining any questions you have.

I did that a few months ago.

Now, as I remember it goes something like this...

you pay the registration fee to start your studies. YOu buy your books for the prescribed amount. When you are prepared to take the exam, you pay that fee. Next year (and each subsequent year) you pay the continuing registration fee. When you are ready for the next class, you buy the books, pay for the exam and so on.

Hope that is clear and correct. If it isn't then someone will probably fix it.
Like I said, it has been a few months ago and it is a little hazy in my mind. I was looking at the English program also, for my wife. But she has decided to go with UNISA, instead.

    anyway,
    good luck,
