As noted in the post heading, is there any expertise on the site that can provide information on Doctoral programs in Anthropology.

The question is; outside of the medical practitioners is it always the case that someone entering the Doctoral program in Anthropology must have a Masters in Anthropology, sociology or Psychology?

It is understandable that the field of Anthropology is wide from Social to Ancient, however, with many of the posters on this site appearing to have Undergrad degrees, Masters etc in other fields such as Business, Theology, Counselling, Engineering, Arts/Humanities, can a Masters in any of these field, without specific anthropolgy courses enter the Doctoral program?

Calling for a response with specific schools, location, time element to complete, fees etc.

Coursework or research degrees could also be considered.

    Anthropology Graduate Programs

I've been searching for DL anthropology graduate programs for about a year. In my estimate, the University of Wales, Lampeter has the most focused program (MA in Anthropology not MA in Integrated Studies or Social Science with courses in anthropology). You may opt for an MA, a postgraduate certificate, or postgraduate diploma. Within their program, you may focus on social or environmental anthropology or death or nature studies. I have not found DL doctoral programs in anthropology, though a few related programs exist i.e. Leicester University Ph.D. in Archaeology and Ancient Cultures. The Wales program takes about two years (180 total points, 120 in courses and 60 in dissertation involving fieldwork) and, according to my communication with the program coordinator Dr. Trias (sp?), can be completed entirely through distance learning. The total cost is about $8000.

    The Wales, Lampeter site:
    www.anthropology-online.com

Here's the educational route that I've chosen:
My undergraduate work, as you mentioned, is in the humanities and biological sciences. Instead of the two year Lampeter program, I've started a one year, less expensive, DL masters degree in environmental philosophy that I will be able to finish by September 2003. Concurrently, I'm enrolled in the Lampeter postgraduate certificate (60 points, about three classes) and a graduate level anthropology course through Athabasca University in order to get some coursework in anthropology. I hope to enroll in a brick and mortar doctoral program in anthropology, after I complete the DL masters. Although having some anth. graduate courses will enhance my application, I don't think an anth. background is necessary for admission to either the masters or doctoral programs I've been looking at: UMass Amherst, Binghamton, Oregon, British Columbia. Most likely, one would be accepted provisionally until he or she completes the core graduate courses: social, linguistic, physical, and arch.

From my investigations, anthropology is underrepresented in the DL realm. There are some other ancillary options: Vermont College of Union Institute MA in Social Sciences, Athabasca MA in INtegrated Studies, or Excelsior MA Liberal Studies through which some focus on anthropology can be had. I checked UNISA but an undergraduate degree in anthropology is a prerequisite for the postgraduate programs.

Let me know if you find anything else in anthropology and good luck!

John Ryan, thanks for your detailed feedback and showing interest for others on the site that Anthropology is also field that I dont think has been mentioned before but should be looked at in terms of Higher degrees.

Wales & Leicester offer good programs, however, I have not seen too much available in DL in North America. I guess one could always do the Australian or SA route.

The Anthropological society in the UK publish a list of schools offering Anthropology, but have'nt checked the details if any of most offer DPhil/Ph.D by DL and their cost.

For today, I appreciate your input, but would still like to try to get an academic that is a dean or teaches Anthropology to comment on the entry to Doctoral programs by Non Human science masters.

My personal interest was for my own daughter that is considering Anthropology.

Good luck with your Masters final. Please let us know if you will do and where you will be doing the Doctorate either DL or FT.
