I have enrolled at Excelsior and have 5 tests left to take using Lawrie Miller's plan. Some time ago, I took two journalism courses specifically designed for writing and passed both. The admissions person (not very nice, btw) told me that I had to enroll before they would issue a decision on these classes applying towards my WER. So, I have enrolled. Now, how much 'power' do I have in negotiating this? I took the english exam today and have no idea how I did; it was very difficult.

    John,

I believe you have mentioned you journalism classes before and the response from this group that you probably won't get credit for them. As I recall, you had one of their evals done and they did not indicate you would get credit for the journalism classes as fufilling the requirement.

I can't and won't speak for Excelsior, but they outline on page 15 of the Liberal Arts catalog what fufills the WE requirement. It may be that you can get a waiver based upon that criteria. I don't know and the only people that can tell you are at Excelsior. If you don't pass their writing test, they may not be too keen on letting you meet the critera using your journalism courses.

In my opinion, if you can't pass the test you should be taking a writing course anyway. Excelsior requires 3 credits of WE, so you can either take a correspondence course from someplace like LSU, take their MLS Writing Course, or take a course at a local university.

Cory, you are right, I have gotten responses re: the possibility of getting credit, but I was more curious about one's status upon enrollment. Do they 'own' you at that point? I thought about the point of not passing the test and the likelihood of their granting credit and I agree, not likely at all. I also agree that I would not deserve the credit if I can't pass the test now, but does that really hold true? If someone took a RA class 20 years ago, shouldn't they still receive credit?
Anyway, the point is moot; they will do what they want, and hopefully I passed the test!!
