So I made it to Member with only 30 credit points, its like going on fast track Degree, it only takes time, effort and someone else's money. Contributing to a thread on the DL discussions site can be quite rigorous at times, now I'm shooting for a fast track to Senior member...is there an easier way?. John Roberts Ph.D (London ICST)
What does it mean John? John: What does PhD (London ICST) mean? It's the ICST I don't understand? 'telfax'
Re: What does it mean John? International Christian School of Theology? Institute of Credible Studies in Theology? Inter-Continental School of Transcendentalism?
There is most certainly an easier way. I'm sure that Chip gladly accepts $100 bills. I bet if you sent him 3 or 4 of those, he would be more than willing to make you a senior member. Tom Nixon
Here's some techniques that have been used in the past. Start up threads in the off-topic forum about something, e.g., your favorite sport team, political discussion, religion, terrorist Start up some threads in the unaccredited forum extolling the virtues of some degree mill.
While hanging out in internet cafes in Spain this summer, it did occur to me that I could get a HotMail account under a different name, and set a record for becoming a senior member. I even wrote out my 100-word message, to have been delivered one word at a time. And then I discovered that this board doesn't permit posting messges closer than one minute apart. The prospect of spending nearly two hours to achieve this disheartened me. But is the rumor true, or did I just start it, that lurking in the system is yet another designation, higher than Senior Member, achieved only after a yet-unreached-by-anyone number of posts. Perhaps 5,000?
Senior Accredited Member perhaps? P.S. Any chance we could start a pledge drive to restore the smiles? Or is it perhaps part of someone's doctoral study in psychology?
Dave, your observation was bang-on, the intent of this particular post was to try to break up the tension that sometimes occurs on the site with an occasional smile. As always the postings take attack and live up to what we all expect it too be, a free for all. Here I was believing (gullible old grey ic guy) the Members and Senior members offered good advice to those that wanted to pursue DL without going off into paranoia and not lurking around just to get the biggest number of postings or kicks poking fun at others. For a bunch of supposedly intelligent men, educators, professionls and those that want to get there (sorry Kristian its a trophy thing) we behave like a bunch of grade school flunkies. J.B's comment about lurking is also correct since it is assumed that people register under several different names with 'nom de plume' including omiting their true location and other really basic info about themselves. Should the site make it a mandatory requirement for people to state their true identity, location, and insisting ONE member status, or shall we continue with the misterious and sometimes weird 'handles/call signs that people use on this site? By the way who qualifies right now for the Senior Accredited Member position? For the record, I have changed my handle to: J.R (ic)... Thanks Bill. PS. And thats not an 'idiot college' as we used to call it or even and integrated circuit for you electrical bods. Oophs, there we go again with the degreeinfo study in psychology.
It is fun though. Actually they seem to do a pretty good job here of catching this potential abuse. Using IP addresses, it's possible to catch and eliminate this practice. I assume that if someone just wanted to change to a different handle, they wouldn't bother eliminating the redundent accounts. What they do seem to watch for though is people creating new accounts to pretend that they're multiple people.
Unworthy! Actually, I've always felt quite unworthy to be called a "Senior Member" when you, Dr. Bear, the godfather of distance education, have the same title. Until such time as you are elevated to a nobler status, I would be contented to be called a "Senior Member in Training."
David: Actually, I've always felt quite unworthy to be called a "Senior Member" when you, Dr. Bear, the godfather of distance education... John: I appreciate that it is a compliment, but somehow I have visions of Marlon Brando playing the part when the film of my life is cast. "We don' accept dat credit at Corleone University." Not to mention the prospect of waking up to find the head of . . . no, I won't go there. David: ...have the same title. Until such time as you are elevated to a nobler status... John: Well the notion of 'grand panjandrum' did arise last week. I've always kind of liked 'eminence gris' (at least since I became gris).
J.B, I think (not) you missed it, why do we have to tell the world we have draconian thinking and to boot, a grading system even in the fun things that we do like postings on this site. No levels for the posters or users, no undergrad status or graduate status, just plain old...ready for it..Members! Given the size of the USA, the number of people constantly doing the education thing (learning that is), I wouldnt give 2 bits for the education in the rest of the world (been there done that), because we have more doing it, produce more of it and therefore need not worry about the institutions in SA, AUS,GBR & EURO education, since they have too many different it levels it seems (even in the EC) and very complicated ways of recognising qualified person. The ONLY thing they have over us is cost and the fact they teach in several different languages (other than english). To close this discussion, Who was it anyway that came up with the silly notion of Member levels in the first place, they qualify for 'Dinosaur Member' status. J.R (ic)
