In an older thread, someone asked about a doctor of arts via DL. I see that Trevecca Nazarene University is offering such a degree in theology and Bible.

    Any thoughts about this program?

    Thanks.

I don't know about the program (I can't seem to access their web site tonight), but the school is regionally accredited via the Southern Association.

    Cheers,

Roscoe, you say this is distance ed? I'm pretty sleepy this morning but did not see where the site indicates that this is a DL program.

    Bill,

Sorry. I must have misread some of the info at their site. Maybe it was the language about doing this while keeping your job and working fulltime in the minstry, etc.

I guess when you think about it, that can be said for any local school.

    Again, my apologies.

I have sent an email to the school and made a phone call to find out more. Thanks for taking a look.

Certainly no apologies are necessary. Even the info that a DA is being offered in Theology was new to me. Trinity of Indiana will make hay with that! I really like the Nazarene grasp on education and have experienced it ; too bad they follow the erroneous Russellian soteriology! (yuk)

    Bill,

Help is available for this TTS obsession you seem to have. A small daily dose of Paxil, along with--as needed--doses of Xanax, can remedy this recurring problem. <grin>

OK, I'll give it a try since you refuse to rise to my baiting re Russellian soteriology to distract me from my TTS obsession as any good bro would do. Is that how you solve your cases of pastoral counseling as well, prescribe paxil? Sigh, how far from Wesleys feet have you fallen Russell! (grin).

Not far at all, Bill. Remember, Paxil/Xanax did not exist in Wesley's time. <smile>

    Russell,
I am going to start back up with Columbia in South Carolina. There is a good chance we'll move there, apart from the Army.

    Can't wait,

Roscoe has emailed me this school's description of its DA in Bib/Theol. Entry requirements include RA MA and Millers/GRE (of 1100) . Qualifying exams consist of Hebrew, Greek, , hist/syst theol, and philosophy. My guess is that these qualifying exams are broader and tougher than in many doc programs. Theology requires a lot to do it well! The Program can be completed with short summer residencies. Dissertation and final exams will be done. The program prepares one for college level teaching. It includes work in "how" to teach. GOOD! Nothing about this seems quick or easy.

Speaking as a student who has a lot of experience measuring profs who held varied degrees and as a theologian who knows what is required to do Christian theology, and as an educator who has been in an EdD program and has spent 34 years 'teaching' ,and so values the how to teach , not just the what to teach , this looks to me to be a program which should prepare one to do what the program aims to accomplish.

In comparing this DA with a DL DPhil or PhD in some schools which only require theses, it seems to me that this DA would better equip one to teach. Both require the MA to enter, but whereas the DPhil/PhD can be at times be done simply by a writing the thesis, this Trevecca program requires the broader experience of coursework too. I am not sure that I was prepared after my MA in Theology to teach Theology nor am I convinced that doing a dissertation on say some isolated grammaticism as "articular infinitives" or a narrow doctrinal topic as "yada as a precursor of proginosko" would have done much to add classroom competence to that MA! {In my present thesis, though, as I am synthesizing one narrow topic into the broad spectrum of Christian doctrine so each chapter resembles a separate course. } It really is unclear to me how this DA is a lessor qualification than a PhD in Theology and it arguably is much superior than the DMin in practics which we often see profs now days teaching exegetics or systematic theology with!.

Still there may be some drawbacks. There is a glut of docs in theology. Too many PhD's too few jobs! Will a DA be perceived (even though I think this one should) as the equivalent of a PhD? (Of course it is not the equal of a USA ThD as the prerequisite for that is a four year ThM not a one or two year MA). It needs to be recalled too that the Nazarenes have strong opinions (Wesleyan-Arminian). In my MA from one of their schools we spent a year studying Arminius! Will Trevecca be narrow in its teaching? Will other denominational or even schools with theological bents as dispensationalism or Calvinism look with favor on a doc from a Nazarene school? And of course the residency, even if limited, will hinder some and other schools
offer the PhD in Theology with limited (or outside the USA) no residency.

Nevertheless, I think qualified seekers of an advanced degree in the Christian Religion should give Trevecca a close look.

    Bill:

WOW! Sounds wonderful! Would sure love to see a sister program at Point Loma Nazarene University in nearby San Diego!

Although I don't have a masters in theology... it is on the radar scope for my future... especially if PLNU established a sister program here!

I have done quite a bit of library research on D.A.'s and feel that when properly presented by a worthy institution the D.A. is indeed a very respectable degree. The D.A. never really caught on... and that's too bad...

    Hi Bruce

I was born and raised in San Diego where Point Loma Nazarene now is. But when I attended (1966-68) it was in Pasadena and was called Pasadena College. Back then there was not even ONE grad theology or seminary in San Diego except the then unaccredited Linda Vista (now the TRACS accredited 'Southern Calif"). Now there are several. So I drove up to Pasadena for two years to get the MA. Excellent profs there then! The Nazarenes do education well, I think!

What I especially like about those few DA programs I know of is the teaching componant! I get to actually resent the notion that if one has a PhD , he just must automatically know how to teach. It is one thing to know a topic and another to aid othersin acquiring that knowledge.
