I am an idiot when it comes to math with the possible exception of accounting. Tell me the best exam for me to take to satisfy Excelsior's math requirement. I looked at Lawrie's plan (which I am for the most part, following) but don't see exam difficulties for math exams. Thanks for your help!

The College Mathematics General CLEP is the easiest CLEP math test. Whether or not it will meet the requirements for your degree depends on the program. For instance, the CIS program requires Calculus, and the Psychology concentration requires Statistics.

A quick look at the BA in 4 Weeks web site using the on-site search facility yields:

    MATHEMATICS
CLEP College Algebra is the simplest math exam allowable that will meet the Business degree math requirement, and that's is why we've chosen it. The Exam consists of 70 questions in 90 minutes split into two 45 minute sections. I comprises questions covering factoring, powers, roots linear equations, inequalitiesquadratic equations, exponential and log functions, graphs. If you'd prefer to attempt something a little more complex, please feel free to do so. The are two other CLEP exams that will meet Business degree math requirements: College Algebra and Trigonometry; Calculus and Elementary Functions. The CLEP College Algebra, I believe to be the easiest of the three.

Statistics is a separate requirement and is detailed later in the same page. With respect to the Liberal Studies option in the Liberal Arts degree program (the other option you may be following), the CLEP General Exam meets the math requirement. There is no Stats or other quant requirement for that degree (though there are other "science" requirements - also detailed in the manual).

Lawrie, thanks, I didn't look in the business section. I am trying to get my BS in Liberal studies. Doesn't that have a more "relaxed" requirement? If so, would you still choose the test you mentioned or would you go with the CLEP general exam?

For the Liberal Studies option in the Liberal Arts bachelor degree program, the math exam detailed in the BA in 4 Weeks Lib Arts degree manual, the CLEP General exam "College Mathematics", fulfills requirements and should prove the least burdensome.

I gave a good look at both CLEP and DANTES College Algebra tests. It seems to me that the DANTES one is somewhat easier -- not only but also because it has no time limits. Does anybody have a direct experience about that?

I think it looks easier too. I also think many schools look at the DANTES Funds of College ALgebra easier than the CLEP College Algebra. Excelsior, for example, on their credit for testing page states that the DANTES Fundamentals for College Algebra will not satisfy the college algebra requirement for their BS in Business program (while the CLEP College Algebra will).

If you look at the outline of each, the CLEP version does cover more material. Old Dominion University will even consider CLEP college algebra as precalculus credit (in conjunction w/ the trigonometry) while the DANTES algebra is considered college algebra credit.

So, yes I believe these (while having almost the same name) are a little different.

    Best Regards,
    Bill
