Union learners recently received a form letter from the VP for Academic Affairs noting that there are some changes to the Ph.D. program on the horizon. But it didn't say what those changes would be, and they wouldn't affect currently enrolled learners.

The changes seem to be in response to a visit from--and meetings with--the Ohio Board of Regents during Union's re-authorization review.

Due to the recent review of the Ph.D. programs and the opportunities associated with the acquisition of Vermont College, Union Institute and University has requested and has been granted provisional authorization from the Ohio Board of Regents for two years to accommodate reauthorization and reorganzation processes. Prior to October 1, 2004, UIU will request full authorization from the Ohio Board of Regents. The content and requirements of the Ph.D. program may change for those learners who matriculate after October 1, 2002."

The letter goes on to say "It is important to note that learners currently enrolled at UI&U will complete their PhD programs according to the policies and guidelines in effect prior to October 1, 2002."

They note that the OBR was supportive of UIU's doctoral programs, and especially commended their interdisciplinarity, social relevance, low residency format, outreach to the community, and UIU's target audience of adult professionals and educators.

What the letter does not state is which changes are going to happen. They also make it clear that the school's regional accreditation remains intact, and that this process does not impact accreditation. (Yeah, tell that to Beacon College!)

They make it clear in the letter that the OBR has some specific "recommendations" for the doctoral program, and that UIU looks forward to the "challenge" of implementing them. I wonder what they are.

    Residency Requirement ?

    Rich:

Do you think Union will amend its residency requirement?

Perhaps from 35 days to 34 1/2 days?

Man, I hope not. Steve will be furious!!!!!!!!

    Hi, Rich,
In many states, any work done by a state agency, division, or department is often "public knowledge" and available for public inspection by state law. Those who want details might try e-mailing the Ohio State Board of Regents:

    http://www.regents.state.oh.us/

at the following e-mail address available at the above Web site:

    [email protected]

and ask them if they have produced a report or similar document on this and if it is available for public inspection and how you might receive a copy.

    At the following link:

Digest of Actions from the Ohio Board of Regents meeting
    September 19 , 2002 (Posted 9/20.2002) link:
    http://www.regents.state.oh.us/bdmeet/sep02/dig092002.html

there is within the above digest from that September 19th Ohio Board of Regents meeting a link to an approved resolution in .pdf format:

Union Institute and University, Cincinnati, Ohio: Provisional Reauthorization, which is item number 8 at the following URL:

    http://www.regents.state.oh.us/bdmeet/sep02/dig092002.html

Again, I would e-mail the Ohio Board of Regents or telephone them and ask if they produced any report or document that is available for public inspection and how you would be able to obtain a copy to read.
