    Here is the situation

I am 33 years old, have worked only in the hotel industry for the last 10 years on a part-time and full-time basis. In 2000 I decided to go back to university to get a bachelors degree. I got exempted from 2 years of the 4 years necessary to get a Bsc in Hotel Administration. This was based on my previous workexperience and qualifications.

The main reason i went back to school was to get a degree and change careers. Most of the graduates are going into other sectors the hotel and catering.

The school was good in marketing and process management but not in the business side of things (bookkeeping, accounting)
This has led to me being rejected for jobs that I really like.

So here comes the next step, getting a degree which has a strong focus on business and accounting.

For various reasons, mainly monetary, I cant go back to school fulltime again and getiing an MBA seems a bitout of reach at the moment. Can anybody give me advice on getting a cheap BBA or BA in business studies. Even an diploma program would be enough.

    Thanks for your help

    Hello RDL,

First off, is your current degree accreddited? If so, whom is it accreddited by? After you supply that many here can help you out.
BTW, why I ask is that you stated you were exempted from your first two years, that verbiage makes me a little worried.

    Hello and Welcome

Since you've found degreeinfo.com - you have tapped into an invaluable resource for ideas.

    BUT

Do you want to be a general business practitioner? Do a business start-up? Be an accountant? Any one of these choices will flavor responses from the board.

Look into one of the big three: Excelsior, TESC, or Charter Oak for starters. Excelsior (http://www.excelsior.edu) allows liberal transfer and accepts CLEP and DANTES tests. Might be the "cheapest" way to get where you're going.

Don't forget: you get what you pay for.

Hey Gus - I just visited your web site and while I didn't scroll all the way through the listings, they appeared to be remarkably comprehensive. It's a great resource for those in search of business degrees. Great work!

    Dear All,

Regarding your postings, let me explain about my degree.
It is a four year degree, for which you need to accumulate 168 points.
Each point is equal to a workload of 40 hours. During the first three years you have to take modules which are worth 6 points each.

    Year 1 6 Modules
    Year 2 6 Modules
    Year 3 6 Modules
Year 4 An internship of at least 10 months and a report about your internship

In year 2 and 3 you have to write a dissertation worth 6 points. During the first three years you need to do volunteer equal to 4 points.

I was exempted from year 1 because of qualifications that I have, which are equal to a British HND. Year 4 was waived because of my work experience

So I was able to gain a Bsc of scinece in Hotel administration in just two years.

The school that I went to is called Hotel school Leeuwarden part of the Christelijke Hogeschool Noord-Nederland. ( www.chn.nl)

The school has been accepted by the open university in the UK as a possible way to bring transfer credit for a second degree. ( www.open.ac.uk, click on credit transfer )

The school is recognised and accredited by the Dutch Government. ( In the netherlands they also supply most of the funding

I require a degree which would improve my knowledge more to the business side of things, especially accounting/ bookkeeping. I do not want to gain a specific accounting degree, but if this is the best option available I will do so.

    Hi again RDL,

Perhaps you should re-examine your quest to get another bachelors and consider an MBA. The MBA would fill in the gaps that you are describing without a big difference in c/h's. If that still doesn't appeal to you, the next best thing, IMO, might be a graduate certificate that has the courses you want to bone up on. In any case, good luck in your search.

The MBA is my ulitmate goal, but I am worried about the financial stuff that you must take while doing an mba

That is the reason I want to get another bachelors degree, considering my time limit and money restraints. the MBA is something for down the road. But any diploma programs you can recommend?

Tnx for all the postings, it cleared up some major problems. The website BA in 4 weks was very helpfull as well.

Hi, I would like to get a degree in hotel admin. as I have many years of experience just like you. Did you get your degree via distance or did you go to the Netherlands?

It sounds to me like you already have a fine BSc. I don't see why you should multiply your bachelors degrees.

I gather that you are located in Europe. One alternative that you may not have considered is approaching this the American way, and simply taking some additional individual classes in areas like accounting where you feel that you need additional work.

That seems to be more cost and time effective than doing an entirely new bachelors degree simply because you want to broaden your business base.

You could probably do the additional classes *and* an MBA for the same cost and in the same time as another bachelors would require.

    Dear All

Here are some of the answers to your questions posed to me on my quest to another degree.

I have decided to pursue the Dutch Equivalent of a post graduate diploma as a way to get onto the road of MBA stardom. Still I will focus on accounting mostly since this is where my interest lies.

Regarding questions posted to me about getting a degree through distance learning on the field of hospitality management, here are some of my recommendations:

In the Netherlands there are two schools which have some form of distance learning (they both have some residency, but as far as I understood these are not obligatory, clearing the way to gain a degree completely by distance learning. As always I want to caution everybody that officially there are not many things possible. Just be persistent and make sure that you can meet their standards by making a very sound proposal. Of the two schools I found Leeuwarden the most flexible one in terms of exemptions and being creative. I studied at this school full-time.

Hotelschool Leeuwarden has a part-time program, which involves meetings on a regular basis. You need to be employed in the field in order to be accepted by the school. If you still need or want to attend the meetings, keep in mind that it is about 2 hours driving from schiphol airport. Their website is www.chn.nl

Hotelschool Maastricht has developed a program which involves heavy e-learning. I applied for this program but found them to be too rigid in their requirements. This was 2 years ago so their policies might have changed a lot. A friend of mine is participating in their program and he is very happy with their system. Their website is can be found by www.google.com and type in Hotelschool Maastricht you will find various links to their program. They also have an MBA program on a parttime basis which is vewry good, but has a residency requirement.

One university I would like to mention is Oxford Brooks in the UK. They offer both an Bachelors degree and an MBA in Hospitality management. Their reputation is very good within the industry. As proof to their quality, one of the Vice-principals of Hotelschool Leeuwarden is doing his MBA at this school through distance learning.

Hope this gives you some leads, otherwise just post something and I will help as much as I can
