Hi, I am new to this forum. The thread on the UoL LLB program caught my interest. I have a couple of questions. If anyone can answer them, I'd appreciate it.

What exactly does "advanced standing" mean? How many credits would you have to take, as opposed to a traditional program at an ABA approved school, if you graduate from UoL with an LLB?

    Thanks.

    Hi Marty,

I'm going to be studying at the U of London, I couldn't tell you a whole lot about the program because I just recently sent in my enrollment form and am currently waiting on my materials from the school.

I'll try to answer your question about "advanced standing" at a ABA school though. Normally a full-time program at an ABA school takes 3 years of study to complete. If someone is granted advanced standing, they are given credit toward this time. From what I understand, usually you are given either one or two years of credit toward the program (although from what I understand schools are rather reluctant to give 2 years of credit, but if you search around long enough, you might be able to find some that will for the right program [I'm hoping a quality program from UOL will make it easier in their minds though. :)].)

I'd appreciate hearing from anybody else with comments on this scenario though. Thanks!

I suspect STRONGLY that no ABA school will grant advanced standing for an EXTERNAL University of London LLB degree. The ABA is VERY slow to recognize the virtues of distance learning. I believe that one standard for ABA accreditation is the number of CLASSROOM hours required for the degree.

    Nosborne,

I understand what you're saying in your statement, but I believe that I read some information to the contrary a while back (just trying to remember where it was at the moment). I'm almost positive that I read about some External UOL grads getting advanced standing at certain ABA schools. I'm going to do some searching and see if I can bring up the info to link to this board.

You're certainly right to be skeptical about this situation though, I believe that what I read basically indicated that certain schools were reluctant, at the least, to grant advanced standing though. From personal experience, however, I understand that there are always those that are willing to go against the trend... But I wouldn't expect this from a top of the line law school either (such as Harvard or Stanford). This question certainly requires more research though, and I'll see what kind of info I can come up with.
