Taking a chapter from University Alliance, CCU is a consortium of (unnamed) private schools accredited by some of the less commonly mentioned legitimate accreditors.

I think that the name of this consortium will confuse, rather than clarify (perhaps that was the intended outcome). Community colleges are typically understood to be regionally accredited institutions offering up to the associate's degree. Although the listed accreditors are, indeed, recognized, it seems odd that the institutions involved (apparently occupational, trade and technical schools) are not also listed on the site.

  3. Yes, it's confusing. In New Jersey, they have something called "Coastal Communiversity" which is based at Brookdale Community College. And they offer MBA as well as Master's degrees in Nursing, Education, Engineering Management, IS, etc. Go figure...

  4. Is it really a consortium, or is it just Westwood College, which seems to offer the same programs?

  5. Must be, Gert -- this afternoon when I looked at http://www.community-college-university.com/ I saw that it is now identified as Westwood College.

Some states define "community college" specifically as a publicly-funded institution. For example, California (where Westwood has several campuses) says: "The California Community Colleges are postsecondary schools and shall continue to be a part of the public school system of this state" (Education Code, Section 66700). Illinois (Westwood has three Chicago campuses) defines "community college" as "Public community colleges existing in community college districts organized under this Act, or public community colleges which prior to October 1, 1973, were organized as public junior colleges under this Act, or public community colleges existing in districts accepted as community college districts under this Act..." (110 ILCS 805).

  6. Wow. That changed quickly!
