    Mariah made the interesting discovery that (a) Bernadean is now Burney, and (b) there's an old but intriguing letter from the California State Bar clarifying their complicated status.

    Old-timers will remember Bernadean as the school that gave you a certificate absolving you of all your sins, along with each degree.

    Bernadean ---> Burney. Is this a nickname? Perhaps a trend? Can we expect
    Columbia Commonwealth ---> Collie
    California Coast ---> Callie
    Greenwich ---> Greenie
    Fairfax . . .

  2. According to Bernadean's website, the 'university' was named after Bernadean Kadans, the late wife of president, Joseph Kadans. Perhaps she was called Burney?

  3. LaSalle --> Lassie
    Kennedy-Western --> Kenny
    TESC --> Tessie
    Rockefeller U. --> Rockie
    SUNY Buffalo --> Buffy
    Chico State --> Chickie

    Maybe it could become Barney University, admit 2 1/2 year olds, and offer a PhD in stuffed purple paleontology.

    John: When Kadans died, Mrs. K inherited the university. ("Some day, my dear, all this will be yours...") The one time I spoke to her, 5 or 6 years ago, she said she had just agreed to sell Bernadean to a man who was then planning to start a California correspondence law school. Said man did in fact start such a school, but whether he built it on the foundation (such as it was) of Bernadean, I do not know.

  6. Must be a different Mrs. K. This is from Bernadean website:
    • Bernadean Kadans died on January 10, 1965, a victim of cancer. Prior to her marriage to the current president, Joseph M. Kadans, Bernadean was one of the founders of the University. The name was changed to Bernadean University after her passing as a memorial to her memory.

    Awright, whoever dies first gets stuffed and put in the lobby.
    Does a p.o. box have a lobby? :confused:

  10. Ahah! You must be from UCL, where Jeremy Bentham still attends meetings of the College Council, and is recorded in the minutes as "Present but not voting."

    Before Berandean Kadans married Joseph Kadans she was married to Nicolas W. Burney, a Las Vegas "doctor" of questionable practices. My mother was a patient of Dr. Burney's in 1958. He died from black widow spider bites either in the late 50s. I would have been 11 or 12 then and don't remember the exact date. I do remember that Kadans ran for some political office in Las Vegas after marring Bernadean. I am a writer researching a story on Dr. Burney--a humorous account of my mother's penchant for finding quacks--there were plenty. I came across your website in my search of information about Dr. Burney.

    Thanks for this, Kathy. It never fails to amaze me how much information lurks out there, ready to be revealed, eventually. Kadans was a real attorney, having passed the Bar in, I think, Maryland. And there are still a few people practicing law in California based on their Bernadean law degree and passing the California Bar.

    Kizmet (re the certificate absolving you of all your sins, along with each degree.)
    Can you get the certificate without the degree?

    John: If you will post a complete list of your sins, the Committee will consider it.

    Indeed. Here's some:

    http://www.quackwatch.com/04ConsumerEducation/Nonrecorg/bernadean/in_re_kadans.pdf

    It's a reprint of the decision on Mr. Kadans' 1976 petition (denied) for waiver of the ABA-approved school rule, for permission to sit the Nevada Bar exam. It contains some pretty scathing comments on Bernadean U..

    Besides his activities with Bernadean U., it appears (from a quick Google search) that Mr. Kadans authored two books on herbology and natural foods and did, as mentioned, run for political office. He ran unsuccessfully for the offices of mayor and municipal judge in Las Vegas.

    If we're necromancing a 12-year-old thread (nearly a record) there should be some juicy details.

    According to the cited document, Mr. Kadans also founded the "Church of Universology Inc." Sounds rather like a pre-internet mashup - perhaps a mix of Scientology and the ULC? Now THAT would have been something! :smile:

    Bernadean U. may have passed into oblivion, but Mr. Kadans' Church of Universology doesn't seem to be leaving Las Vegas any time soon. Perhaps you'd like to help the Church go solar? https://joinmosaic.com/solar/nevada/las-vegas/church-of-universology-98199

    BTW - unearthed an old (1872) book on Universology (religious context) here. The Basic Outline of Universology: An Introduction to the Newly Discovered ... - Stephen Pearl Andrews - Google Books Ain't this newfangled Internet a wunnerful thing? :smile:

    Perhaps this work may have contributed in some way to the founding of the Las Vegas church. Only those in the Church know for sure, I guess.
