Hi everyone! I'm planning to take the CLEP Information Systems and Computer App. exam and the DANTES Management Information Systems exam soon so I'm wondering which books I should use to prepare for them. Any suggestions? Were the tests difficult? Thanks for your help!

    Hi Steeler

I read two MIS books before taking the test because I was unfamiliar with the sw development process. It was probably over kill. You definately want to take the practice test from the College Board's Official Clep Exam book. Remeber that you only have to score well compared to other test takers. There are many questions which you aren't expected to answer correctly. If possible read the archives for Lawrie Miller's and Tom Head's posts. Good luck.

    Steeler,

First, I am unfamiliar with DANTES test.

In terms of the CLEP test, I took the test with no study, but I work in the computer field. The CLEP test jumps all over the place, but it is very general. Know the basic peripherals such as modems, scanners, printers, etc. Understand very basic networking concepts with regard to LANs and WANs. Know what a word processer, a spreadsheet, etc. are, and have a basic understanding of how to use them. Understand "pseudo-code" to the point that you are able to follow very basic variables and loops.

I had some issues with a few questions on the CLEP test (based on actual experience, I could argue that all possible answers were true, but I was supposed to the identify the one that didn't fit and was false).

Truthfully, I don't know if an MIS book will cover what you need, but it seems like a place to start at least...

CLEP IS & Comp Apps is much easier than the DANTES MIS exam. The DANTES MIS exam garners upper division credit at Excelsior, the CLEP exam is lower division.

    BOOKS - no magic bullet

CLEP exam - any general text on basic computer operations, applications and systems. No great depth.

DANTES MIS - generic MIS primer well read will do.

The respective CLEP and DANTES practice tests will offer a fair view of the required knowledge level. Do these in the first instance to provide yourself fair estimates of current competency. This is an essential exercise.

If you have Systems experience, neither exam should prove difficult. It may be you will be able to sit and pass the actual exams with no further preparation. That was my experience, anyway.

In the back of my mind I seem to have left a note that both of these exams will be retired this year. In respect of the DANTES MIS exam, this info may have been culled from one of the monthly DANTES "fliers" (updates) sent to military education officers - I read these occasionally just out of general layman's interest. There are loads of these. I cannot recall where I saw this but most likely the DANTES web site (link available from the mainmenu of BA in 4 Weeks).
