A quick google search netted UMUC and UOP on first page. There may be many more. Why don't you do a search since you know more than anyone exactly what you are looking for (what flavor).

I believe that Webster was the first entrant offering the Doctor of Management, dubbing it the DMgt. Later comers like UoP and Case Western have preferred to call it the DM.

It definite has a niche in my opinion. In the same way that the DBA is the professional degree counterpart to the academic PhD in Business, the DM seems to be the practitioner's counterpart to the PhD in Management. There does seem to be some agreement in this forum that the pecking order of these doctorates (as gauged by the demands and intensity of the research component), falls into this descending order: PhD, DBA, and DM. That notwithstanding, the DM programs look quite interesting, and I'm sure they would probably meet the objectives of those undertaking them.

Forgot to mention above that the jury is probably still out on how the DM would be welcomed as a teaching credential, however. Looking at RA business school faculty rosters, usually PhDs comprise about 80-85% and DBAs 15-20%. It seems uncertain that DMs are going to have much of a presence in that scheme. Again, of course, the DM is aimed at educating practicing executives, not academicians. To a lesser extent that was once somewhat true of the DBA too, yet the DBAs have gained strong footholds in both camps.

Dave - the whole business about DBA versus PhD in business is quite dependent on school. For many years Indiana awarded DBAs or PhD's based on exactly the same degree requirements - grads got to pick their degree label. Now they award PhD's in business. Some schools only awarded PhD's in business, others only DBA's. Harvard, as an example, only awards DBAs. There are some southern schools that also award only the DBA. Those that award both degrees typically differentiated the degree based on research (PhD) versus practice (DBA).

Virtually all the job adds in academe that I see call for a "PhD in business or DBA..." I've not seen a real difference between the two in hiring or status.

It is interesting to note that Nova Southeastern, my alma mater, recently announced that they would switch from offering the DBA to PhD. They've decided to add a practictioner oriented DM with lower research requirements.

A school that I've worked with (Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, MI) recently started a DM program in IT. Their rationale was the DM was to be practitioner oriented and that NCA was more likely to approve a DM than a PhD. Based on my experience at another DL institution that was turned down on their PhD proposal, this may have been a wise move.

    Hi Andy,

I totally agree with your observations. In the Greater Boston area, for example, Harvard and Boston University award the DBA, while MIT and Boston College grant PhDs. All four programs are rigorous and demanding. So this further corroborates your point. I believe that Harvard was one of the earliest programs. From day one, the HBS was viewed by Harvard University as a professional school, and the DBA degree seemed like the appropriate designation for the terminal business degree, both for research/teaching and work outside of academe. It's too bad that over the years the picture became clouded with the DBA/PhD dichotomy, often largely meaningless, producing more confusion than clarity.

    Andy:

I just wanted to update you on something. I have been talking with NSU as I am looking for a place for my doctorate and inquired about the DM because I remember you saying something about it. Christine Gregory, who I spoke with said they were considering it but it is no longer under consideration. They have decided not to offer that degree. I just wanted to let all those know who may have been interested in that.
