    FMU

2 people at my office have degrees from there. Their positions do not require a degree, but of course a degree is always helpful. We do hire people without degrees if they possess the needed skills.
1 woman has an AA from there and displays a soiled photocopy proudly on her desk. She is a complete dolt.

Another fellow has a BS from there and is quite competent, he was a construction worker and a truck driver before joining our firm. He is now using self study to progress the Cisco CCNA-CCNP-CCIE track and is partway done. I am not sure he learned anything at FMU he could not have learned on his own but he does have a degree now. He knows it is not RA but for what he wanted to do the NA was good enough. The industry certifications are more important than the degree but the degree opens the door so that he may present the industry certifications.

    Re: FMU

I am a former graduate of FMU and my credentials have never been challenged. I have been promoted eight (8) times in the last six (6) years and I am in line for a “Senior Level” position. I have taught (Adjunct) business related courses at schools such as Nova, Barry, FIU and FAU.

During my fifteen (15) year career in government, I have encounter individuals that have graduated from schools such as FSU, FIU University of Miami, Harvard, etc., and most of them have ended up working for me. You cannot judge an individual in accordance to the school that he/she has graduated from, but based on his/her abilities to perform well on the job.

FMU is a very good school considering that it is not RA. Some of my friends that attended FMU while I was attending are successful CPA’s Lawyers and a Vice President for a Major Bank in Florida.

    Re: FMU

If the degree is Nationally Accredited then it is accredited. There is no evidence I am aware of that National Agency standards are any less stringent that RA. In fact at one point a few years ago the USDoE commended TRACS methodology (IIRC).

I think the examples you mention do show the issue that performance & intellect are individual. AA degrees do FAAAR less (personal opinion) in developing thinking skills than a good Bachelors degree does. I remember a Sergeant Major who was pro education and said that an Associates degree helps you to make multiple choice decisions (Is it A or B or C). A Bachelors degree devlops analytical skills so you can assess a situation and analyze all the issues and then come up with an approriate solution. This is certainly assuming the students properly completed their education and were not simply buying papers and cheating on exams.

I am drifting here but the process in education is what concerns me about undergraduate degrees that are earned through portfilio credit and life experience. It greatly misses the genuine educational experience in developing critical thinking skills, etc. Now, would I advise someone who needed a degree quickly to pursue one......yes. Why? Because it is accredited and has utility reagrdless of the fact that I would consider it inferior to my bachelors degree. I could not in good conscious tell someone to sit in a class for 4 years when they need a degree far quicker for employment purposes or career goals. Steve L. earned his degree this way and today as he says regardless of what we think of the quality of UIU or the quality of his PhD he is Dr. Levicoff.

North (boy did I drift...anyway just some thoughts that came to mind).
