Looking for a good RA school offering a Master's Degree in Economics. It would help me in my job because I work with economic data on a daily basis, and my employer would probably pay for most of it(they will pay for Economics and Statistics courses for those in my job).

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Distance ed, I assume?

If you mean via distance ed, why not the best?
Then it's the University of London.

    http://www.londonexternal.ac.uk/postgraduate/index.shtml
    Among their offerings are:

    Agricultural Economics-MSc & Postgraduate Diploma
    Economic Principles-Postgraduate
Economics of Rural Change-MSc & Postgraduate Diploma
    Financial Economics-MSc & Postgraduate Diploma

    GOOD luck.

    Re: Distance ed, I assume?

Thanks alot. I looked at their site and they look like a good program.

My only concern is the examination centers. I live in a not so big place(Baton Rouge, LA) and am trying to find if there is a center nearby, and am not even sure where to start looking.

    Any tips on that?

  4. University of London typically uses the Consortium of College Testing Centers of the National College Testing Association.

I am in the MSc program and live in New Orleans. While the only testing center is about four hours from my home, the school said they would work with me on this. My experience with the program so far has been very good. They have excellent materials and the comments from the tutors are very good. I am completing this program at the same time that I am working on my DBA at ESC Grenoble (there is an economic component of my dissertation that requires further economic study which is why I am doing them both at the same time), so I stay rather busy between work and school. My experience with the first course was that you have to spend at least eight hours per week if you want to keep up. I spend another 12-15 hours a week on my dissertation, so right now distance education is my second job.

I would agree with Orson about the University of London being the best program available, however, their programs do have one drawback...zero contact with an instructor/professor. It is completely self-taught (of course they give you all the materials). If I was interested in Economics I'd give it a shot but if the solitary nature of this program begins to sound unappealing then you might want to check out:
    U of Melbourne
    U of New England
    U of South Africa
    U of Tasmania
All are reported as having Masters programs in Economics. BTW, Gert was right about the U of L testing centers. Good luck,
    Jack

It's true that many of our undergraduate programmes are unsupported except by tutors or institutions that the student has personally organised.

However, the postgraduate programmes offered by the University of London External Programme, mentioned on this thread, are supported by a virtual learning environment and a personal tutor who can be contacted for help and advice on any aspect of their studies.

p.s. The nearest NTCA examination centre McNeese State University in Lake Charles may not be suitable. I've asked our examinations office and they should be getting back to me. Lamar University-Beaumont, TX is probably the nearest examination centre to Baton Rouge but my US Geography is not great and there may be a closer one.

    Dear RedStickHam,

As I thought, McNeese State University has not been used as an examination centre by the University of London to date.

Thanks for the clarification. This may make a substantial difference for some who are considering these programs.
