I see WIU is hard at it in China - see http://www.usawiuedu.com/index_eng.htm

With Delaware company registration and WAUC accreditation, it has partnered with Shanghai University and Xian University of Technology.

    Will wonders never cease?

    Cheers,

    George

I just find it remarkable that one would pay $6000 for a Master's degree from a place that offered no recognized accreditation. Degree mill Master's can be had at a fraction of that price and $6000 approaches the cost of the cheapest RA program.

Quite true. Of course, it would also involve doing the actual schoolwork to earn the degree, and that isn't what this is about, is it?

Interestingly, WIU has an office in Hong Kong and tuition fees can be paid by US$ or HK$. However, I do not note that there is any advertisement in Hong Kong for its courses.

Clayton University is another university that has an office in Hong Kong, but I also do not note any advertisement of its courses in Hong Kong. Its web site is http://www.culhk.com

  5. I wonder if this is a case of a new entity using an appealing name that's already being used by someone else...

The Web site that George points out claims to be "an institution registered according to the Laws of the State of Delaware, USA as a LLC to provide quality higher education for students around the world." The contact page provides address, phone, and fax for an "Asia Pacific Representative Office" and also a PO box in Delaware for the US address. The same address was used for the domain registration. USAWIUEDU.COM was registered 5/16/2002 to:
    Washington International University LLC
    PMB 310
    2207 Concord Pike
    Wilmington, Delaware 19803 US

A "Washington International University" operated for some years from an address in Pennsylvania and within the past couple years moved to a South Dakota mailing address. It states that it was founded in 1994 and "is incorporated in South Dakota and the British Virgin Islands for the purpose of higher education and granting degrees to students who meet the graduation requirements of the University." WASHINT.EDU was "activated" May 18, 1998 to:
    Washington International University
    817 Summit Grove Ave.
    Bryn Mawr, PA 19010 US
(However, the address now shown on the Web site is 401 East 8th Street, Suite 200-L, Sioux Falls, South Dakota 57103.)

The Delaware WIU states that it is a member of the World Association of Universities and Colleges (WAUC). The Pennsylvania/South Dakota WIU states that it "has never applied for, nor ever used any government funds or seek any accreditation." (But "All Washington International University degrees are ATTESTED and SEALED for authenticity by a government NOTARY!")

    Interesting.

Be careful of false statements. A while ago, a BU says that it has joint program with Renmin University, one of China's top universities. It turned out that just somebody use the university's name to do business with BU. The officials of Renmin denied any official involvement with BU.

I doubt that the above two universities have official connection with WIU. Even though Shanghai University is not a top university in China, it is still a good metropolitan university. Recently, China's Ministry of Education said that unless proved by MOE, all these so-called joint education programs are not recognized by Chinese government.

  9. Good point, Jonathan. We can't believe everything we read; just because this WIU says it has agreements with certain institutions doesn't make it so. (It *is* listed on WAUC's Web page of accredited and member schools as a member , so there's corroboration for that statement.)

Jonathan stated, "Recently, China's Ministry of Education said that unless proved by MOE, all these so-called joint education programs are not recognized by Chinese government."

I've read this, but have never found the Ministry's website or other online source for a list of these approved joint education programs. Is there a link available?

Actually in the MOE list above, there is indeed one program related to Shanghai University (#47 in the list). But that is SU with University of Technology Sydney.

    Taiwan anyone?

Taiwan's Association of National Universities and Colleges has decided not to respond to "any request from commercial institutions (including national and international magazines) for providing assessment information or questionnaire investigation." Why? The schools felt they are "entitled to develop individually and autonomously" according to their specific circumstances. We hope they will change their mind. As Thailand's Dr. Rung has discovered, universities need an outsider to celebrate their strengths - and point out their weaknesses.

This is from Asiaweek's online magazine

I have lived over here since 1988
My Pastor is shelling out more than $130,000 NT
for his DMin degree with an emphasis in counseling.

The above clip does not surprise me at all....
I wonder if the religious schools are listed in that group?

My name is Jim ooops! I forgot to mention this before.... but I am so used to using - asiatrek

On a tangent, is Chadwick University applying for a new type of accreditation? On, www.chadwick.edu the International Association of Universities and Schools accreditation is no longer listed.

NT$130,000 (Taiwan dollars) are equivalent to US$3,800.
