How would credit for this test be applied towards earning a degree? Specifically Excelsior College? Would I be better off studying for more specific exams?
    thank you

Unless the policy has changed recently, Excelsior does not grant credit for the general exam, only the subject exams.

As noted in BA in 4 Weeks, credit is awarded for acceptable scores in the GRE subject exams. No credit is awarded for any score in the GRE General Exam.

The GRE General Exam in its structure and content, is not comparable to any GRE subject exam. See

As others note, Excelsior doesn't award credit for what is, essentially, an aptitude test. Neither does COSC. Both schools, however, award credit based upon the GRE Subject Exams where, presumably, one may demosntrate comparable knowledge to those who've earned degrees in each respective subject.

I did the Sociology exam in 1980 for Excelsior's predecessor, The University of the State of New York/Regents External Degree Program. Got 39 s.h. without studying or taking any courses in Sociology. I was 20 at the time. It was a joke, but I got a second bachelor's (a B.A. with a concentration in Sociology) out of the deal. (The available credit is now lower and on a sliding scale.)

Thanks for your help. I was wondering why I never saw it on any of Lawrie Miller's suggested coursework for a BA.

    Re: Re: General GRE exam

Since 1996, for the award of a maximum 30 credits for a GRE subject exam at Excelsior, the score required has been above the 80th percentile.

At the time Rich sat the GRE, I see that 39 credits were awarded for a score above the 30th or the 35th percentile.

Having written two GRE subject exams in the modern era, my thought is that a score above the 80th percentile requires in-depth understanding of the subject under test.

Lawrie, not applicable to this thread, but how can I gain access to the "year 4" material from you BA in 4 weeks site? I managed to print everything but this page. I have the business degree plan and cannot decide on a BS or a BA. This will help, thanks again.
