Argosy University/Phoenix Receives APA Accreditation for

    Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology

Accreditation Recognizes Excellence in Post Secondary Education

(Phoenix, AZ-July 31, 2002) …The American Psychological Association (APA) announced its decision to accredit the doctoral program in clinical psychology at Argosy University/Phoenix. The announcement to accredit Argosy’s program was made by committee leaders at the APA annual meeting in July. The doctoral program in clinical psychology at Argosy University/Phoenix will receive a five-year accreditation.
The accreditation is a tremendous step forward for Argosy University/Phoenix, formerly known as the Arizona School of Professional Psychology. The APA accreditation will permit the first class of AU/Phoenix PsyD students to graduate this fall from an accredited program with enhanced credentials.
“This is a great accomplishment for our doctoral program in clinical psychology, for the school and our students,” said Mike Robinson, interim president for Argosy University/Phoenix. “It is an honor to receive the seal of approval from such a prestigious organization and for our university’s doctoral program to be recognized as an educational program that operates in accordance with APA principals and guidelines.”

According to Robinson, the accreditation process was stringent. Argosy University/Phoenix underwent an intensive self-study of its objectives, educational and training practices, resource support base, faculty, students, graduates, and training outcomes. Argosy University/Phoenix also participated in a review of its operations by a site visit team of professional colleagues, followed by a review by the Committee on Accreditation. The APA accreditation of Argosy University/Phoenix will be retroactive to the site visit that took place in October 2001.

Accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (www.hlcommission.org) and member of the North Central Associations, Argosy University is operated by Argosy Education Group, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Education Management Corporation (Nasdaq:EDMC). Argosy Education Group owns and operates Argosy University, with 14 primary campuses and six extension sites in 11 states with an enrollment of more than 5,600 graduate and undergraduate students; Western State University College of Law in Fullerton, California; Argosy Professional Services, and ITI Information Technology Institutes in Canada. ITI Information Technology Institute offers a postgraduate education program at two locations in Canada, teaching students to apply technology to business problems.

Education Management Corporation (http://www.edumgt.com) is among the largest providers of proprietary post-secondary education in the United States, based on student enrollment and revenue. In addition to Argosy University, EDMC's Art Institutes offer master's, bachelor's and associate's degree programs and non-degree programs in the areas of design, media arts, culinary arts and fashion. The Company has provided career-oriented education programs for over 35 years, and its Art Institutes (http://www.artinstitutes.edu) have graduated more than 125,000 students.

Formerly known as the Arizona School of Professional Psychology, Argosy University/Phoenix offers a bachelor’s degree completion program in psychology, doctoral degree in clinical psychology; postdoctoral respecialization programs in clinical psychology and sport-exercise psychology; and master’s degrees in clinical psychology, sport-exercise psychology and professional counseling. Tom,

This is good news but not unexpected. A number of other Argosy doctoral programs in Clinical Psychology are APA approved. Their program in Florida will probably be next in line for this approval.

As I'm sure you are aware, this is not a DL program but requires taking coursework on campus.

Essentially, Argosy U plans are to have all of their campuses establish themselves as an all in one program offering to include programs such as PSY.D, DBA ED.D, etc. and gradually achieve the APA accreditation for all of the campuses offering Psy. Programs. The Chicago Campus has just introduced a DBA program component. Also, the Atlanta Campus is in the process of introducing additional program offerings and lets not forget the new Dallas Campus.

Within the next 8 ½ years or so, their plans are to open approximately fifty (50) additional campuses through the nation/Canada.

In so doing, Argosy University does not consider them as a DL institution, but a modified traditional setting, (This is all subjective).

Overall, this is great news not only for the school, but also for the overall student/alumni population.

    Tom:

Can you give me some more information on Argosy offering all of their programs at all of their sites? I would like to start my studies but going to FL is not as pratical for me. However, going to GA or VA/DC would be much easier if they offered the Ed.D. in Organizatoinal Leadership at those sites. Let me know as much information as you can about when they expect of offer more at these two sites. Thanks!!

argosy has changed since the U.Sar. days

    U. of Sarasota used to have a Summer doctorate. The premise was you attend Summers and take some classes and then take classes at a distance the rest of the year. I think it took about 3 summers. Sort of similar to the way Capella does it with a certain number of face-to-face classes and some at a distance.
I have inquired at Argosy a number of times to find out if the program still exists. People on the phone say they still have that program, but the information they send only has the on-campus programs.
Maybe someone else has had different results?
    All the best!
