Illinois has three programs that seem to be similar to TESC. COSC & Excelsior - Board of Governors Bachelor of Arts Degree Program Governors State University Bachelor's Degree Internet Continuous enrollment Board of Trustees Bachelor of Arts Degree Western Illinois University Bachelor's Degree Internet Continuous enrollment Board of Trustees Bachelor of Arts Degree Program Eastern Illinois University Bachelor's Degree Internet Continuous enrollment First glance indicates maximum costs (take all course on-line) of around $12,000 and shading down from there depending on prior learning, portfolio, and transfer.
Funny, I was just referring someone to this program this morning. The BOG and the BOT BA degree programs have been around for a long time. They differ from the offerings from the assessment colleges in that, 1. some minimum portion (21 to 30 IIRC, depending on institution) of total credits must be earned under the auspices of the conferring institution. 2. in the case of the BOG, there is, as I remember it requirements for minimum existing credits to qualify for entry into the program - usually 60 but less if you can document other acceptable learning. The BOT has no such restriction. 3. the requirement that one course on the Illinois constitution be taken. Memory suggests the requirement was that this be tested on campus, but that may have changed to make the degree entirely distance based. Like the three assessment institutions, the BOG and BOT BA programs accept exam and portfolio based credit. The issues are (or were) with the general limitations on transfer of external credit compared to programs of the Big Three, where such transfers can represent 100% of credit required for degree conferral. Completetion requirements BOG amd EIU BOT = 20 hrs through the school WIU BOT = 30 hrs through the school It is not totally clear, but it appears that even some of these can be done through indpendent study or similar.
ANY satisfied customers...? I recall there having been board input from satisfied grads of the WIU prgram, but has anyone from the BOG or BOT programs? ANYONE HERE a grad from the Illinois BOG or BOT degree completion programs? --Orson
Re: ANY satisfied customers...? Hi Orson, I am a satisfied grad from the BOG/BA program from Western Illinois in 1993. To help with some of the requirements when I attended... 1) 120 hours - specific requirements for hours in upper level and subject matter (English, Social Sciences, etc.) is required. 2) Exam on the Illinois Constititution. A study booklet was sent to me and I took the exam at a local Junior College Testing Center. (The JC Testing Center recieved the test from WIU, proctored the exam, and sent the exam back to the WIU) 3) I was required to take 15 hours at WIU to qualify for residency. All 15 hours could be taken via independent study. The exams are proctored by a certified testing center (like the JC testing center I used for the Illinois Test). 4) There was also a writing exam. It was very pedestrian but proof you could do college work. My only attendance at the school was graduation and I live in Dallas, Texas. I had many hours from several schools, and I was going to have to take many more hours in order to get my degree. WIU was an excellent opportunity for me. I have referred several students to this program with varying levels of college work. EVERY TIME, the reference had glowing responses. The stories are great. A good program --- ABSOLUTELY! I reccommend it! Incidently --- "Cont'd" is the BOG (now BOT) new letter that I recieve (I believe quarterly). Hope this helps!
