Just completed my high school at Pennfoster and enrolled for their AS in CIS.

A little background - I am not a first-time schooler. I did my bachelors in engineering in 1988 (in India). I work as a programmer in the USA. Why I am doing this? - I don't know. May be I want to stay young for a few more years :). My daughter enrolled in Pennfoster in 2012 and she was a bit depressed as she was new to online education. To encourage her, I enrolled too. We used to study together, and I used to tutor her. Life took it's turns, and she decided to quit. I stayed off for a while too, but recently, I got my cravings back and completed the remaining credits .

Anyway, I enrolled in their AS in CIS program. Why I joined an NA program?

    • I get 15 credits transferred from my high school program, reducing the load to 45 credits
    • I got eyes on WGU BS in CS program, and WGU may take the Pennfoster AS degree
    • Most Pennfoster (but not all) courses in the program are ACE evaluated, so I got an edge there

    Let's see how it goes.

Makes perfect sense to me. You are to be commended. We are all not square pegs to be placed in square holes. Also certainly you will pick up new innovations in the field you last formally studied in '88. Best of luck in your new adventures.

You should encourage your daughter to finish her degree, even at an Associate Level. It would open more doors than just a HS diploma or GED.

Yes, many good government union jobs are available by having an AA only! They come with pensions, and all of the major holidays off. I got my first government job with an AA as a requirement. Once you retire, you get lifelong benes, life long medical/dental/vision benes for you and your spouse, etc. It beats private industry with a stick.

Congratulations! Your plan sounds solid. Best of luck!

What was it like doing high school work again? Was it like learning everything anew, was it like a refresher, or did you feel like you should have been teaching rather than taking the classes? :wink1:

Also, do you have career goals related to the BS you're looking to pursue, or is it more for the learning experience?

Thanks for the suggestions. She decided to move back to India and get married, but the marriage didn't work out as expected. She's a mother of twins now, and I can't bring her here to USA as she can't be my dependent anymore (visa rules). I had to send my wife to India to stay with her and provide support, while I support from here financially. Finally she realized the value of education, and now is preparing for high school (through National Open School) and a degree (through IGNOU) simultaneously. I still tutor her (and my son who is in 7th grade now) through Skype.

Thanks Maniac :) Actually, it was a bit of everything. The Humanities part was totally new, Maths and Science was a refresher but I somehow had this feeling I should be teaching (which I love to do).
The BS is more or a learning experience, but there are hidden career goals too. There seems to be a myth in my field of work (Software development) that you won't learn and grow much after crossing 50. I want to prove to my current and future employers that I haven't stopped learning despite my age.
Ofcourse there is the "secret" desire to get a PHD and teach one day...
