Umm - could that possibly be because of population? 1.324 billion - almost as many as China. Any halfway-decent Indian school is quite likely to have many, many more applicants than it can admit.

And last I heard, distance-ed, which might go a long way to alleviating the problem, was mired in authoritarian controversy, with much of it being declared illegal/unacceptable...

The brightest Indian students are probably welcome at Harvard. The rejection rate for the best-and-brightest from anywhere is probably very low.

    Correct because of its population.
I was in a good mood today I guess. I subconsciously wrote "thanks" at the end of my previous post. Just notice it.

India also has exceptional low pass rates for their Chartered Accountant exams.

The Keck Graduate Institute is kind of a peculiar school.

It was one of my California-approved favorites back in the day, becoming RA very quickly (as I recall, it skipped candidacy). It began with a PhD in Applied Life Sciences. (Students all receive tuition waivers and stipends.)

KGI | PhD in Applied Life Sciences

It's since rolled out a pharmacy school and a PharmD. So there's a definite emphasis towards biotech, pharma and inventing new drugs.

There are a bunch of masters programs too, all with a similar focus. One interesting one is a Post-doctoral Professional Masters in Lifesciences Management, aimed at people with research backgrounds who already have PhDs who are transitioning into management or entrepeneurship in biotech or pharma. (Happens a lot.)

    KGI | Postdoc Professional Masters

And then there's Minerva School. It's something totally different and a bit out of character given the above.

KGI is located in Claremont California, an LA suburb. Minerva is based in San Francisco. Minerva doesn't have any lifescience industry focus but rather seems intended to create a new sort of elite undergraduate institution from the ground up. I do like their willingness to rethink the undergraduate education.

From the student reviews earlier in the thread, it sounds like a work-in-progress that hasn't worked out all the kinks yet. But it does seem to have an energy and a community feeling that's looks attractive.

The statements from the Minerva student sounded a bit like someone who had coasted through school and then finally ran into a place that forced them to work hard, really hard and that maybe for the first times in their brilliant little lives they found themselves in a place where being brilliant and driven is only average. Maybe I'm mis-reading.

Yeah, that's the impression I got too.
