I quite liked the article in The Onion, stating that she had ordered all primary school teachers to flatten the globes in their classrooms.
I don't think that any fair and thoughtful person can find much fault with Secretary DeVos' eleven priorities. (And no, none of them have anything to do with the Earth supposedly being flat.) Empowering parents to choose educational options that best meet their kids' needs will probably be unpopular with opponents of school choice, particularly with the teachers' unions. Placing greater emphasis on learning outcomes and on value to students and taxpayers will probably threaten the teachers' unions too. Simplifying and streamlining education will threaten administrators and regulatory officials whose careers depend on the whole process being impenetrably Byzantine. Emphasizing not only kids with disabilities, but also kids with special gifts and talents, might be politically incorrect. I'm not very sympathetic to those potential criticisms. All in all, I like it. My main complaint is that it's vague. Seemingly everything written by professional educators is vague, and it's often hard to know what fine-sounding edu-speak phrases mean when applied in real-life practice. Though to be fair, Secretary DeVos does go into a lot more detail in the Federal Register submission.
