Agood affordable DL, MA Humanities

Where would one find a decent Humanities Online.

 

At the risk of stating the obvious, I've heard nothing but positive comments from graduates of the California State University - Dominguez Hills M.A. in Humanities program, available 100% non-residentially.

At least several people on this forum are enrolled in, or have completed, the MA in Humanities program from Cal State, Dominguez Hills. The tuition is very affordable at only $4650 for the whole thing, I believe. I only remember positive comments; I would suggest that you do a search here, but the ability to search for 3 letter words or acronyms, such as "HUX," has been disabled. I'm sure that at least a couple of people who have experienced the program will pipe up sooner or later. One of the program's staff members checks in here as well.

My 2 cents about CSUDH HUX Program

It is a good traditional program. Having said that,and having completed 27 semester hours as of this semester, personally I feel the limited interaction with your teachers is a significant problem for some individuals. Your whole grade is based on writing formal humanities papers (MLA format). Some of the professors are rather elderly and teach these courses out of commitment to the humanities. I have had to resubmit some papers that have been lost. The best advice I can give is to sign up for the [email protected]. The discussion over the last two years which is searchable will give you good insight into the program's strengths and weaknesses. Good Luck. Phil Ternahan

That group is moderated -- new subscribers must be approved. And the discussions are not accessible except by subscribers.

Which would be fine, except that when I tried to subscribe (after reading your post), I was rejected, no reason given. I have no idea why this would happen, and if someone from that group would tell me, I would certainly appreciate it. Perhaps they think I am someone else? (I'm aware this is off-topic for this board, so if anyone wants to contact me privately about this issue, that would be fine.)

More on topic, though -- I think that, since CSUDH hasn't really provided a good alternative for students to get together and help each other, it is important for student-formed groups to be open and accessible whenever possible. It is vital to have some sort of support while completing the program.

The new Campus Pipeline system the school has put up has message boards for each class. It might be worth checking out. But I don't think there is currently a general HUX discussion group hosted by CSUDH that is functional. The one linked from the HUX web site is quite broken.

A problem with the Campus Pipeline boards, as well, is that one has to be enrolled in the program to get to them. So prospective students seeking info can't be helped by them.

 

Clarification re HUX599 Yahoo Group

I just spoke with the moderator of the above mentioned HUX599 Yahoo Group.

Apparently it is a private list, for a particular group of students who all started on the thesis process at the same time. It's not intended to be a general resource at all. So that is why new subscribers are rejected, and you shouldn't feel bad if you are.

So that leaves only a couple of currently active HUX student (or prospective student) resources that I am aware of:

1. the huxstudents Yahoo Group that I mentioned before

2. http://huxhelp.freeservers.com/main.html - dated in many sections but still with some useful links

All the others are either abandoned or non-functional.
