It is disappointing to see so many articles about online education written by those with little knowledge or experience with the topic. It is particularly sad when something this poor and cursory comes from a scholar of the stature of Dr. Romero. He relies upon a single study--based on only a single institution--and repeats uninformed statements about online and for-profit education.

Unlike many who write incoherently about online education, Dr. Romero possesses the research chops to have actually engaged with the decades of study on the topic and the fact that not all online courses are the same. Unfortunately the claim the "Online education is faulty and needs reform" cannot be taken seriously based on this article.

It is disappointing to see so many articles about online education written by those with little knowledge or experience with the topic. It is particularly sad when something this poor and cursory comes from a scholar of the stature of Dr. Romero. He relies primarily upon a single study--based on only a single institution. Although he refers briefly to the community college studies (done by Shanna Jaggers), he falls into the common error of assuming that all online courses are similar to each other and that online attrition is only due to online courses. His statements about for-profit education also suffer from the common "lump everything into the same box" mentality.

Unlike many who write incoherently about online education, Dr. Romero possesses the research chops to have actually engaged with the decades of study on the topic of mediated instruction and the fact that not all online courses are the same--nor are their outcomes. Unfortunately the claim the "Online education is faulty and needs reform" cannot be taken seriously based on this article.

Hasty generalizations seem to be a nearly universal failing in reporting on higher education. It's pretty frustrating.
