Having just finished my MBA, I am interested to know where one might find postings about adjunct positions --- particularly those at schools who need DL instructor support? Kindly, Steven King
Walden University, Cardean University, Jones International and University of Phoenix are always looking for DL instructors, however, competition is getting tough these days and a PhD or a DBA is becoming the minimum requirement. Good luck!
The old standby is the Chronicle of Higher Education jobs section. There are more & more DL positions being advertised there every month. Bruce
RFValve - thanks for the "head's up" concerning these schools. I was impressed that Jones International actually has an online application process to get you started (perhaps this adds credence to their need for instructors). I fired off an application last night particularly aimed at the undergraduate level. Kindly, Steven King
I received a brochure in the mail (unsolicited) from University of Phoenix - Online just last week. They're looking for DL instructors/professors. I forget what their minimum requirements were (PhD or Masters) but you could give them a call. I've been an adjunct instructor at George Washington University (www.gwu.edu - not DL) for several years now; even before I had a masters degree. I suspect that there may be some flexibility of degree requirements, depending on the program. I'll get into the details here because I think I remember you mentioned that you're an R.N. I began teaching ACLS, PALS and related courses at GWU. After the professors became comfortable with me, I began teaching undergraduate classes for their Emergency Health Services program and even a few laboratory classes at the medical school. I think that no matter what the 'official' requirements are, there are opportunities for people with specialized skills. Good luck! Steve (The other Steven King)
Here's a few places to try: Job board at Ed-X. Job page of Virtual University Gazette. Adjunctopia. Job list at AdjunctNation. Academic360. HigherEdJobs. (Plus, don’t forget the usual Monster, HotJobs, etc.)
Steven, Thanks for the lead - I need to look into the local schools for real-time adjunct positions. The only real limitation being not much flexibility since I am active duty with the Army. ACLS, PALS, BTLS, are all good options - thanks for the stuff to consider. Steven King, The other Steven King with a Touro MBA...
Gert, Thanks for the links - it'll keep me busy for a few nights [read: Thank you Lord for a four-day pass!]. I am quickly discovering that my employment history is difficult to summarize in resume form. I know I should be answering questions about where I want to go - and I'm really not sure. Which leads to a question for those of you who have switched careers, or have great diversity in your employment history. Has anyone ran across great resources online for building a CV? I have looked into a few sites that spring up from Google - and they look fairly promising. Has anyone been in the situation aforementioned and opted to sit down with a service and see if it could be drafted into a workable CV? Any guidance is appreciated. Kindly, Steven King
monster.com just threw a targeted ad/online application form from University of Phoenix at job-seekers with advanced degrees. It says: "Teach part-time as a university instructor via the Internet! [...] To qualify as a University of Phoenix instructor, you must possess a master's or doctoral degree and have at least five years of relevant work experience." There's a pulldown menu for "Academic Area You're Qualified to Teach": Doctor of Business Administration Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership Doctor of Health Administration Doctor of Mgt. in Organizational Leadership Education: Administration Education: Early Childhood Education: K-12 Education: Law Education: Research Education: Special Education Education: Teacher Education Education: Technology Human Services Management Nursing Nursing: Doctoral Prepared Interesting that they're seeking faculty in those areas and no others.
