Well, I finally did it... I signed up for my first PhD classes.

After months of going back and forth, I finally decided to apply for a PhD program. I was admitted into the U of Cumberlands Leadership PhD and will be pursuing a criminal justice specialization. I am excited and a bit nervous at the same time.

As a small criticism... I was not impressed with the application process. I had to stay on top of them. I almost had to pay twice for transcripts after they failed to download them. It took multiple emails and about two weeks to get it straightened out. I actually received warnings from two different universities that my transcripts were about to expire because they failed to download them.

Once I got through the admissions office though, the leadership office staff have been great. They've been very easy to work with and very accommodating and professional. I look forward to working with them.

I think we have a few U Cumberlands people here. I'd love to speak with you privately and hear about your experience so far.

    That's great, welcome!

That's fascinating, back when I was applying the process was totally smooth. In fact, at the time I wasn't planning to go back to doctoral study at all -- all I did was fill out a form asking for information and they replied saying that my application was in process and all I had to do was send them the rest of the required materials (which was everything). I laughed because I know a good close when I see one, and the rest is history .

Anyway, these days they're probably flooded with applicants. I'm glad you made your way through it!

Typically, unless there's some unusual situation it's preferable to ask questions publicly so the answers can help those who come after you. But if something is up you can PM me or click here to email me.

What other programs / schools did you consider?

What made you choose University of the Cumberlands?

I'm strongly considering Indiana Tech''s PHD program, and am looking for feedback.

I believe all college administrators to be people with no skills but good relatives.

There were several things that made me choose University of the Cumberlands. The price, regional accreditation and convenience were the biggest three factors for me. I also wanted the PhD because of career goals and felt it would help me more than a DPA/DBA. I also liked the education background with the criminal justice specialization that they offered as I ultimately would like to lead a local police academy or technical college criminal justice program.

I looked at several programs. Valdosta State's DPA, Walden University PhD in public affairs, and Nova Southeastern to name just a brief few. With the exception of Valdosta State, they were all insanely expensive ($50k+) and I felt some of the programs I looked at had too much of a negative stigma attached to them even though they were legit universities/colleges.
