Overdue, IMO. I could never understand the need for revised textbooks for math that hasn't changed since Euclid. And texts that do need frequent revision can be more easily revised digitally.

Openstax is very cool and I'm glad Kizmet has started a thread on it. It's hosted by Rice University in TX and offers downloadable introductory textbooks in high-demand subjects. They are free, peer-reviewed and open-licensed, what's not to like?

    Their catalog is here

I've downloaded pdfs of many of them for my personal use. The only ones that I've actually read at this point are Microbiology and Astronomy. I thought that overall they were very good and easily the equal of other 'Introduction to...' style collegiate textbooks.
