    Distance Education in Romania:

The Romanian Ministry of National Education sanctioned DL programs through the promulgation of order no. 3457/23.03.1998, which introduced Distance Learning Education at Romanian universities. This being a new phenomenon, it is worth further investigation on this forum. I have taken the time to review this development, and I am reporting on it for further study. I have found that many programs of study in many fields are available, including undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate. Also, for foreign students, English is the medium of instruction in these taught and research programs. In some cases, some residencies (for oral or thesis exams) are/may be required.

In terms of cost, it is very inexpensive. It is some where between the inexpensive programs of South Africa and the Australian programs, if one is looking at it from an American Dollar point of view.

Many of the following web pages have functional English versions.

The University of Oradea organized the Department for the Distance Learning Education:

Better yet, say it three times real fast without spitting all over the one you are talking to.....

Thank you, Shabs. I wish more would take the time to investigate DL opportunities elsewhere in the world instead of "over-debating" issues of accreditation in the United States. It gets to be too much when many pontificate on the minutiae of accreditation in one place in the world, and becoming self-styled experts in such a narrow area (wether pro or con) that much else is neglected.

I wish that others who have "expertise/knowledge" in other areas would take the time to share.

Thanks for the info, KKA. It's certainly worth a look. My illiterate great-grandfather left Transylvania in 1907. To complete a legitimate university degree from Romania (let alone from a distinguished school like Babes-Bolyai or Iasi--not to knock the others) would be a wild bit of irony. Multumesc!

I looked at the websites; some are hard to figure out in their English versions. The Lucien Braga University in Sibiu appears not to have a working e-mail address. If you like fake baroque moldy wedding cake architecture, some of these univs are about ideal. I requested info from several and will report to this forum on the kind of response I get.

Wes: it's bah-besh boy-eye. Cluj-Napoca is pronounced as in English. If that's tricky, you could call it Kolozsvar or Klausenburg (the Magyar and German names for this old Transylvanian university town). ;)

    Oradea says no DL offered.

Anyone else felt a strong urge to investigate these programs based on whether the university names sound "good"? ;-)

    I don't understand.

Craiova does not offer DL in theology; for that, they recommended Bucuresti or Sibiu. The Technical University of Iasi has an enormous and well-written English website for its engineering programs.
