Do degrees earned from distance learning schools in the US like Excelsior carry any weight in Europe/United Kingdom? I am currently living in the US, but I may have to back to the United Kingdom in the future and I am wondering if such a degree would qualify me for a gradate job or entrance into a graduate program in the UK.
Elsewhere it was discussed... Lawrie Miller and others elsewhere on the board have suggested that an American degree--such as Excelsior's--with cum laude honors, is roughly equivalent to a good second class honors (UK) degree. In fact one of the participants at degreeinfo.com, Peter Glaeser (sp?), from Germany, took his degree from Excelsior in Political Science to go onto Warwick University last year! (PLEASE: search these key words for more.) --Orson PS It sounds like Ecelsior's "portability" make it well suited to your need; I hope it's opportunities suit your learning style!
In fact,... In fact, it appears Peter has updated his web site, too.... From <www.peterglaeser.de> to <http://www.peterglaeser.com/> Looks like he's having fun! --Orson
Important issues. In respect of acceptance of Excelsior/Regents/USNY bachelor degrees for the purposes of entry into graduate (master's) programs, I've never once encountered any problem gaining formal admission at institutions in the US, the UK, or Australia. (When all is finally complete I'll post/publish the data on my web site) As I remember it, Peter (Glaeser) applied to 10 top UK universities and received 9 acceptances on the basis of his Excelsior bachelor's degree (he accepted the Warwick offer and is currently at the end phase of the program, writing his dissertation). Lawrie Miller BA in 4 Weeks http://www.geocities.com/ba_in_4_weeks/ .
Thread that refers to... Here's that thread that discusses details of US to UK equivalencies and post-grad applications: http://www.degreeinfo.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4624&highlight=Giancarlo --Orson
I personally would not equate an American bachelor's degree with a British degree of the same name. Perhaps an American bachelor's degree supplemented with an American master's degree is equivalent to a British bachelor's degree with honours. This being a general statement does not apply to some of the finer American schools, such as those ranked in the Top 50 by US News 2002 College Rankings.
I don't think it would be much problem for an Excelsior degree holder to apply to UK master degree programmes. Of course, other factors, apart from academic one, need to be taken into consideration by admission office. The following is an another example of using Regents degree (now Excelsior) for the studies of UK master degrees: http://fbweb.cityu.edu.hk/scripts/staff_cv2.cfm?sno=efmcw103
Thanks, Yan... Than you, Yan, for the example of Dr. Wong. It's always inspiring to see that a DL learner goes on to achieve excellence--whatever the field(s)! --Orson PS So Dr. Wong got his Regent's degree in "Sociology AND Psychology?" It's interesting that they don't allow combined concentrations now--or does someone know that do, somehow? --Orson
