Are there any portfolio examples on the net anywhere? I've searched for them but so far have had no luck locating anything. Even just some narrative examples would be helpful I suppose. Anyone? Anyone?

    Thanks in advance,
    Reed

    Portfolio examples

Hello, Check the off-topic section for the portfolios that were successful for my husband. You can also do a search under my name. If you tell me what you have in mind I'll be glad to share what I know. Hille

    Examples

Good Morning, My daughter did a portfolio for HMM150 or 151 two years ago. I can't locate her transcript in this early AM posting. She had passed the bartending state license from a state sanctioned school, taken a short internet course on-line from a culinary school, and bartended briefly. She wrote a brief narrative and included a copy of her scores and current license. Initially the narrative wasn't long enough. She did a brief re-write directed by her advisor and resubmitted it . If you have licenses or certificates I think the portfolio process is easier. Hille

    HAVE YOU CHECKED OUT...?

Have you checked out these online articles from the "articles" section on degreeinfo.com? Granted, these are not transcribed portfolios--nonetheless, the process is fairly clear I think from these extensive discussions...

Attn. entrepreneurs: there is probably a very good product here.

For years, CAEL, the Council on the Assessment of Experiential Learning, compiled and sold a collection of portfolios of all kinds: a 3-inch thick 3-ring binder, which was not cheap -- something like $50 1980-style dollars. But it was well done, and quite popular: an excellent resource. Something like 20 to 25 separate portfolios.

Then they stopped doing it, reasons unknown to me, and no one has filled the gap.

Perhaps the marketing department of DegreeInfo.com will putthis on the list.

    YES...

    Yes John--

I acquired the set myself (late 80s), but disposed of it.
It was pricey but filled with nice examples, especially
by working adult semi-professionals (nurses, legal asisstants).

Perhaps someone out there would care to part with their own
copy--? and would let it be posted to the internet?
(I'm assuming copyright isssues away, of course!)

I wish I could help, Orson. When I sold everything but my soul and first-born child to Pearson 4 1/2 years ago, it included most of my personal research library -- which they dutifully moved to their offices in the World Trade Center.

Preparing Portfolios for Prior Learning Assessment (PLA)

    Hi folks,

I was intrigued by your discussion of portfolios. In Canada we have a Prior Learning Assessment Institute which directs adult learners in preparing portfolios.

I am a professor and program coordinator for the Tourism and Hospitality programs at Mount Saint Vincent University (Halifax, NS). I have had to assess portfolios for credit on more than one occasion.

Here is link that you may find helpful. It discusses how to document your background and gives some examples:

    http://www.stfrancis.edu/aca/new/haletter.htm

I find that the biggest stumbling block with PLA Portfolios is not transfer credit (that is clear on any academic transcripts included), but it is determining one's actual contribution via work experience, etc.

The biggest factor is external documentation of your performance or contribution, or your accomplishments. This can take the form of reference letters from employers, clients, or institutes where you may have contributed.

It is not enough for you to present what you have done, you need to prove that you did it. This can be difficult for a long life of varied work and accomplishments.

Typically, candidates coming into our program seeking PLA will do the following:

    1) choose the course(s) from our offerings for which they feel they have the equivalent skills

    2) using the course description as a guideline, prepare a document that demonstrates how they achieved each skill (based on work, life experience, volunteer activities, formal education, etc.)

    3) provide evidence by way of projects done, client lists, transcripts, etc.

    4) provide documentation of external validation from supervisors, peers, or other agents.

All of this is included in a binder which is a tabbed, one-stop shop for information for the candidate. I also had one person put all of the information on a CD-ROM which was backed up with a binder!!!

It is tedious, but it can be well worth it in the end. For example, someone who has years of experience in hotel/motel management can complete their Bachelor's degree in one or two years if they receive maximum PLA. (I only know of one person who has actually received maximum PLA). But, it all counts, right?

    Good luck with your portfolios!

    Karen B:)
