Yet, every single time I tell someone this on this board I am attacked and people are told "with experience you can do it, you will land a job with so and so with that DBA from a no name school! GO for it!"

I just see to many Ph.D. holders working in a job that doesn't require a degree.

    This makes zero sense

What were these people doing before their Phd? I doubt it is the Phd that make them unemployable. My guess that they were unemployed before beginner the Phd. Overall holders of Phd have the lowest employment rate.

And yet, there are still people out there with faculty jobs at very legitimate schools, who have totally bogus credentials.

Just yesterday, I was perusing the catalog of a well-regarded RA school here in New England, and a FT faculty member had a legitimate B.A. but his only graduate degree was a M.A. from the Master's Divinity School.

Good insight - increase competition from fake degrees causing harm to degree holders. What will happen if all those people with their fake degrees were demoted to their proper place? Then the people with legitimate doctorates should not be feeling so crowded out. Fake degrees are insidious and are harmful to to honest people. But still nothing is being done.

You're not "attacked", and saying that makes you sound like an Evergreen rioter.

But yes, doctoral study is often foolish advice unless one has pretty specific goals.
