Today APUS publicly announced its 1st two doctoral programs, the Doctor of Global Security and the Doctor of Strategic Intelligence. Cohorts begin January 2018. This is something that's been in the works for some time but not yet announced before today (good to hear no one spilled the beans, present company included). There aren't a ton of details out there just yet, but they're 58 credit (inclusive of the dissertation) professional doctorate programs. Here's the link with more, and to request more info:

    This is great news!

...Criminal Justice graduates, don't even think about it :)

"These doctoral programs are ideal for you if you graduated with a master’s degree in international relations, homeland security, national security, military studies, emergency and disaster management, or public administration."

Okay, but where's the PhD in History we've all been grumbling about for the last ten years?

In related news, the Julliard School has announced an online doctorate for musicians who play second violin in orchestras around the world, obviously the D.S.V.

And Union Institute & University, at which people once joked (in another era) that you could do a doctorate in basket weaving, officially recognized this as a scholarly field and announced that they will now offer an online Doctor of Basket Weaving program (obviously the D.B.W.).

And, covering all bases, California Coast University will offer an online Doctor of Anything you Want (D.A.W.)

Because of the popularity of all of these new titles, the Ph.D. has been declared by a dozen schools to be obsolete and will be phased out once their current students graduate.
    :tragedy:

I've asked a friend there whether she knows any more about that, and will report back here.

I'm considering getting my Master's there. It'd be good to know if they will create a PhD program or not. They need to! It'd be awesome to wrap it up all in one place!

I see this as a double-edged sword; they're offering doctoral programs that are somewhat esoteric, so they don't have competition, but they also might be too specialized to attract sufficient students to sustain them.

Their students, or other students aware of them, are much military or in other security fields. Students not needing a degree from a status school could benefit from these programs.

When I first all the title of this thread, I thought Ph.D in History is APUS/AMU first Doctorate degree offering.

I reached out to my contact as well asking about the Military Studies/History bent. I was led to believe it would be a DA. This is from APUS..

Thank you for your interest in American Public University System’s new doctoral programs.

    Doctor of Global Security (D.G.S.)
    Doctor of Strategic Intelligence (D.S.I.)
As we get closer to the start of our inaugural doctoral programs, we will send you additional information. Until then, here are a few highlights of the degree programs:

Our doctoral programs will be taught in cohorts, with three starts per year in January, May, and September. The first cohort is January 2018.
These are applied doctorates that emphasize empirical research with application in professional practice.
The curriculum is designed to meet strong employee and employer demand for quality terminal-degree studies in the global security and intelligence sectors.
All admissions materials must be submitted by September 1, 2017 to be considered for January classes. Information about student eligibility, admissions requirements and the application process will be provided at the information events, or you can contact our admissions team for more details.
You’ll need to earn 58 credit hours and defend your thesis for successful completion of the program.

These doctoral programs are ideal for you if you graduated with a master’s degree in international relations, homeland security, national security, military studies, emergency and disaster management, or public administration.

If you have questions, please call 855-613-8458 to speak to an admissions representative from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. (ET) Monday to Thursday, or 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (ET) Friday and Saturday.

We hope you will consider joining one of the APUS inaugural classes to help shape the future of doctoral education for the global security and intelligence disciplines!

Considering their constituency, I think they'll more easily fill these programs than if they were offering yet-another-DBA. (But that's also why they should do History!)

They would be the only US institution offering a DA/PhD in History online. The market is there.

It sounds APU/AMU competes with Henly-Putman University's Doctor of Science in Strategic Security, $37,210 price tag.

I'm betting they'll fill up the first half-dozen cohorts without trouble.
