I am carefully considering another graduate degree through the DL options. Having interviewed many of the graduates of the DL program at Syracuse in Engineering Management, communications and social science I am excited. I have heard nothing but admiration; professors willing to go out of their way and really want to make the DL program work, and students who stay in touch with others in their program after they are finished. I do know that some of these programs require a week long residency but they are well worth the look and consideration. The college also issues financial aid. Syracuse University has a very solid reputation and the degrees earned are indistinguishable from the campus earned degrees. I do not want to put to much emphasis on reputation but unless you are simply educating yourself for the education, the reputation will matter somewhat among employeers initially. Why put all of the effort to get a degree from a no name school when you can get a degree from a real school, with professors who seem to care and also the chance to make life long friendships along the way ? It is about as good of a DL program experience as you are going to get. With respect to the MBA program, I'm sure Syracuse is a great choice but the residency requirement is relatively onerous. I mean, 3 weeks per year for roughly 3 years adds up to a lot of weeks in residence. Other schools with reputations at least on par with Syracuse offer DL MBA programs with less burdensome residency requirements or even none whatsoever (e.g. Warrington, Kelley). I hope they address the residency issue because 3 weeks per year on campus takes a lot of the DL out of a DL program.
Hello there! Do tell us more about what others have said about their programs... How generous is their financial aid? (Financial aid can be a great leveler.) What else can you share with us regarding specific programs? --Orson
