UNEM was somewhat of an enigma on this forum and I wonder if anyone has any more info. I have lost the info Dr. Cannon once sent to me.

Does anyone know someone who actually completed a UNEM program?

Hello, I have never received a solid reply from Empresarial University. According to the web site they qualify for veterans tuition breaks. Does this make them a valid distance learning option? Just curious. Have a great evening. Hille

The South Florida Bible College and Theological Seminary list two facility members with doctorates from University of San Jose and one who has reached candidacy of his/her doctoral degree. At least one, actually lists Costa Rica to further identify the institution but the other two do not.

BTW, SFBCTS once applied (and listed this fact in their catalog) to AABC but didn't fair well with two site visits and subsequently have withdrawn application. One of the problems AABC had with SFBCTS was the number of instructors with unaccredited doctoral degrees.

Empresarial University is now running a "marque" on thier web page unem.edu that state they are now accepting applications for all programs. I requested information from them this past Wednesday. I'll keep everyone updated about their responsiveness.

Hello, I checked the site and would like an update about how degrees are perceived from Empresarial. Does anyone know people who are successfull graduates of this school and have it represented in their resume? Thanks. Have a good Saturday. Hille

You've found a graduate from UNEM!

    Good Day:

I graduated from UNEM this past summer with a Ph.D. I do have MUCH to say about them. I am familiar with how students go about completing their PhDs in various countries. The entire four years were ODD to say the least...Upon my return from my defense I started to do a bit of investigating and here's what I came up with:

CONESUP is THE government entity in Costa Rica that accredits private universities. Yes, UNEM is accredited in Costa Rica, but apparently ONLY at the bachelors and masters level. The following link from CONESUP appears to confirm this (it's in Spanish, but the title says "Recognized majors at private universities: Academic offerings at private universities. Updated through session 445 on November 21, 2001)
    http://www.mep.go.cr/conesup/conesup.asp

Click on the Universidad Empresarial link and you'll see that the only degrees recognized are a Bachelors in Business Admin and one in accounting (contaduri'a); the only masters program is in business administration.

In addition, I spoke with one of my friends who works in Academic Services at the Universidad de Costa Rica. He had previously conversed with one of the higher-ups at the Costa Rica Ministry of Education, who stated that UNEM IS NOT ACCREDITED TO GIVE DOCTORATES IN ANY FORM (!!!) Apparently, UNEM is able to give bachelors degrees and some masters degrees but that is about the extent of it. In addition he stated that the Costa Rican Foreign Service has begun to look into the validity of the program because they have heard all this banter about UNEM having accredidation in order to give doctorates.

If you have any more questions let me know!
