the people I know who have completed that degree all had PLA credit for their upper level requirement.

This is a trip down memory lane for me, since I did my B.A. in Humanities at TESC via 6 credits transferred in, 16 credits tested out, and 98 credits by what was then called portfolio (now P.L.A.) I divided my major/specialization credits between music, communications, and theology, with additional credits in these areas thrown into liberal arts electives and free electives. Just for the fun of it, I did my P.G.C. (pre-graduation conference, essentially an oral comp that has since been replaced by the capstone).

The 6 whopping credits I transferred in all happened to be in music: Solfeggio & Dictation I (2 cr.), Keyboard Harmony I (1), Performance Class (1), and Chorus (2). (All credits are in semester hours.)

(By the way, campers, solfeggio is sight singing, and is an actual course in most music programs.)

The ones I pulled off by portfolio were: Rudiments of Music (3 cr.), Folk Music in the United States (3), Recording Studio (2), Harmony I (3), Applied Piano (3), Elementary Voice (3), Folk Guitar Class (2), and Piano Service Playing (1).

I always leaned toward in-person documentation, and met with a community college music professor located near TESU. Two hours later, after performing in several areas and taking a pop quiz in written harmony, I walked away with over a dozen credits in music.

But what’s more relevant to this thread was TESU’s definition, at the time, of “upper level credit.” In music, for example, anything over six credits in a specific subject area was considered upper level, even if the course being challenged or transferred had a lower level course number. If, for example, you successfully earned credit for 3-credit courses titled Brass 101, Voice 101, Woodwinds 101, and Strings 101, half of them would be considered upper level credits although they were all introductory-level courses.

I doubt that TESU is as flexible now, but since I graduated from there 30 years ago, I have no clue as to what their standards are these days. Nor did I care too much, since my goal was to ace a bachelor’s degree solely to get into a graduate program where I could engage in new learning.

That would be nice, but they've redefined upper level twice since then. The previous revision went to course numbers- but 200 or higher counted. Now, it's traditionally defined as anything 300 level or higher. There are some VERY HIGH obstacles in some degrees because of their strict UL requirement and no organic means to meet them. To the OP, if you are even a little interested in portfolio / PLA options, visit the InstantCert forum and message member FallingWaters. She has the degree you're seeking.

According to the same thread on the other forum, the UTPB courses were pre-planned as UL credit.

From another person's experience, TESU will likely not give UL music credit for PLAs completed by young people.

For those following. I did get some answers from TESU and good news. There are three classes at UTPB that I will be taking over the next year to get these UL credits and my advisor has plugged them into my degree plan.

MUSI 3310 - Jass, Pop, & Rock II - comes over as MUS399
MUSI 4302 - History of Film Music - comes over as MUS499
MUSI 3318 - History of Jazz - comes over as MUS399

Thank you all for your input.
