    @Kizmet:
    If the op is banned (for good reason), why are you not deleting this thread?

    When I get to grade papers, I will be reminded, was this a $5 job, or the student spent their own time?

    I just did a web-search and apparently a number of companies and individuals are advertising 'virtual assistant' services at $5/hour or even less. They propose to do data-entry, web-research, scheduling, cold-calling and jobs like that. The advertisements say that these assistants don't require medical insurance or represent other additional personnel costs, are always on call 24 hours a day and need only be employed when needed. (There's lots of talk about "lean enterprises".)

    That's an awfully low wage here in the United States, but there are parts of the world where it's pretty good money. (I wonder how much of the $5 goes to the assistant.)

    So I'm guessing that most of these would-be 'assistants' aren't located in the US or Europe. One was upfront that its 'assistants' were located in India, another that theirs were in the Philippines. Apparently there are monthly 'service charges' amounting to maybe $150 associated with subscribing to these services as well.

    Proposing to do research for university students is apparently an attempt to move up-market.

    Fiverr is a $5 deal. Actually if a person wants some proofreading, corrections etc. it a good resource...besides lots of folks for various advertising concepts, etc. There are a thousand services from transcription to logos to resume writing, websites etc. The $5 is usually a way to get you to use their more expensive packages.

    I use UpWork, and at least through them the answer is most of it, at least the ones who aren't working through an agency (and you can filter searches for that).

    Extra jobs

    (I wonder how much of the $5 goes to the assistant.)

    I do work on Fiverr and $5 is not much but extra "gigs" can bring in 25,50,100 dollars at a time. The $5 is just like a teaser... IE an example is 10 minutes of transcribing your audio lecture is $5 but if want a 45 minute talk transcribed, it is $25, etc.

    There are experts on there for help with checking your writing in different styles, etc. for those who stress over their bibliographies being correctly formatted, etc. Other helps like proofreading, checking for plagiarism, etc. are easily located.

    Of course, you can tell the those who hold degrees themselves by the quality of their assistance!

    My co-author just used Fiverr this week, for a fairly lengthy translation from Urdu to English. There were over 100 people available, many of them with good credentials, and clear pricing (as in $5 per 250 words). A friend has used it very happily for logo and letterhead design . Of course the people offering services hope to get more work out of it, but no guarantees.
