Well, I think I smell a rat....

If you've read my other posts, you know that I am trying to get a degree evaluator to attest that a UNIZUL D.Phil is equivalent to an American Ph.D.

I was advised to contact WES -- "World Evaluation Services" (evidently a very well-respected agency.

In haste, the other day, I sent an email to WES --
"World Evaluation SYSTEMS" asking about UNIZUL...

Here is the reply I got today:

    Wait, wait....

    let me get this straight....

they have never heard of University of Zululand,

but they will attest a degree at those two schools??

Does anybody else smell something fishy here??

Any info on the schools they are pushing?

Have I run across an "Evaluation-Service Mill"??

    If you have to ask....

Seriously, the practice of running a degree referral service just to funnel customers to a degree mill is very established. That they're posing as a degree evaluator is even funnier.

It seems that this institution has some kind of accreditation by the Russian government. Most of the evaluators only check that the degree is legit in its country of origin. May be you could ask if they would take a Malawi accreditation as equivalent. The issue is that they felt that you were looking for an easy degree and they gave you another option.

I think that the "evaluator" in this thread is probably a part of the same operation that runs the two "universities" that it recommended.

This is probably the next frontier in evasive education. We already have degree mills and phony accreditors. The next step will be bogus credential evaluators.

But given the fact, as revealed in the Berne fiasco, that even reputable evaluators bestow automatic "RA-equivalence" on schools that have nation-state-approvals (as opposed to state-approvals), an even more lucrative dodge will probably be off-shore accreditation havens.

I suspect the organization you were attempting to contact was World Education Services, which evaluates foreign credentials.

Just as AMA can refer to either the American Motorcycle Association or the American Medical Association, there is more than one WES.

You are, of course, exactly right. I have written a letter to that WES, and am awaiting a reply.
