This is an amazing 'deal' -- it used to sell for around $900, and now it's free.

Anyone else think this document is of suspiciously poor quality? Moreover, it has weird errors, like saying that Université des Antilles et de la Guyane is in Guyana, when it actually isn't. :bs2:

I saw this in the awaiting moderation line, and before approving it I gave the download a once-over to see if there were any plants, but didn't notice anything obvious.

There are errors! School number 360 in France is:
University of the French Antilles and Guyana - French Guyana (Université des Antilles et de la Guyane),

and school number 5 in Guyana is:
University of the French Antilles and Guyana - French Guyana Université des Antilles et de la Guyane

Guyana and French Guyana are not the same! The latter is of course part of France. By the way, why is school number 1345 in the United States "SMC Swiss Management Center"? It's Swiss - or does Unesco consider it an US school in Switzerland?

I wonder if this is a way of promoting the Amazon Kindle, rather than the international handbook of universities.

Really sobering to see the sheer number of universities in certain countries compared to other countries, especially on a per-capita basis.

".vg is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the British Virgin Islands. Because it allows registration at the second level, and does not require the registrant to be associated with the British Virgin Islands, it has also been used by piracy related websites such as The Pirate Bay, and video gaming related blogs and websites such as the popular Spanish gaming website at Atomix | Todo sobre videojuegos y entretenimiento and the English classic gaming website www.play.vg."

I also wonder why the site is hosted on server in Romania. I know, that can happen, I just wonder why.

OK, that means the answer to my question is yes, Unesco does consider SMC an US school in Switzerland. In fact it's listed under "United States of America - Outside USA", and there are 16 other schools in that category, many also located in Switzerland.

Steve: "Anyone else think this document is of suspiciously poor quality? "

John: It grows stranger. The "UNESCO" who publishes this book is not the United Nations entity, but is the Union Nacional Education Superior Continua Organized, based in Tortola, British Virgin Islands. A convenient acronym, eh? The original International Handbook of Universities is available for about $800 on Amazon.

There were 3 times, over the 35 years that I did Bear's Guide, that someone else put out a book that looked like mine, and was 99% copied from mine, and in 2 of the 3 cases had my name on it, for the sole purpose of including their own bad or fake school. It would be interesting to (try to) learn more about UNESCO of Tortola.

No, it doesn't, because this document is a fake.

That document may be fake, but the world higher education database (http://www.whed.net) isn't. You can find SMC there. Just search for the 'country' "outside USA" and it is one of 17 results. However, the server seems to be down right now. It did work at the time of my last posting.

The address is 90 Main Street, P.O. Box 3099, Road Town Tortola. It may be a coincidence but there was, and perhaps still is, a Unesco Centre BVI in London. Director was Dr George Reiff, of St Clements University and Universidad Empresarial de Costa Rica, among others.
