About 1/4 of this indebtedness is in default or 90 days late.

I wonder what the ratio is based off of race. I saw an article someplace that shows blacks have an extremely high rate of debt and a high rate of default. Perhaps in relation to for-profit education?

Do you mean this one: https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2016/10/21/brookings-study-finds-growing-disparities-student-loan-debt-between-black-and-white? (It's of course based on old data.)

By the way, here is an article about that student loan debt record: US student debt tops $1.31 trillion: Does Betsy DeVos have a plan? - CSMonitor.com,
and here are some statistcs for 2017: https://studentloanhero.com/student-loan-debt-statistics/.

Any guesses of what this number would be if the debt was totally or almost totally bank-owned? I'm guessing that it wouldn't be 1/4 of what it is now.

Plenty of articles, but nothing really comprehensive:

This last is basically a rehash of the Brookings study and underlines the need for "comprehensive federal data on the relationship between college loan debt and race." One would perhaps have thought that such vital data would be readily available. Apparently not.

Wow! U.S. student debt has grown by one-third in a short time. Didn't seem that long ago it passed $1 Trillion! Last I looked, Canadian Student debt had pushed past the $15 Billion mark. Given the difference in population, I think It would have to be almost 10 times higher to be the same per capita (total pop.) as in the U.S. Two differences:

    (1) In general, higher ed. costs less here. Less cost = less debt.

    (2) The vast majority of for-profit schools in Canada are not allowed to award degrees here - including the American chains operating here - Herzing, et al. Their Canadian-approved diploma programs cost considerably less than degree programs would.
