Large 160-page full-color catalog in the mail today, unsolicited, for what they call the nation's newest learning center, just open in Santa Cruz. Huge number of 2 to 5-day residential courses in business and personal development, Many prominent faculty. Reminiscent of the nearby Esalen. No mention (nor need to mention) academic credit or accreditation, but some of the courses could possibly qualify for Edison-like experiential learning. www.1440.org (1,440 is the number of minutes in a day.)
Some of the course names pique my interest, like "Zentangle Weekend." Reminds me of "Pentangle." I've long liked the late John Renbourn's and the late Bert Jansch's very eclectic and cerebral band, from the 60s on. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentangle_(band) I'm a bit of a photography bug, so "Zen and the Art of Photography" looks promising. Better than, say, "Juche Studies and the Art of Photography." There's some intriguing stuff here, and as John says, no pretense about accreditation - and no need for any. I understand the use of "Comes Now," which we generally reserve for somewhat suspect enterprises. However, in this instance, perhaps "Comes Now..." is a little over-dramatic. I certainly don't see this name being headed for a court-docket any time in the foreseeable. On the face of things - I like this one. Maybe it's my 1960s mindset... J.
This place reminds me of the Kripalu Center, which has been here in western Massachusetts for many years. https://kripalu.org/
Definitely some similarities. "Dynamic Chair Yoga" might be about my speed. Interesting offerings - "Deep Writing Workshop" etc. If I lived locally, I'd sure be there. "Snowshoe Yoga" would definitely suit us here in Southern Ontario. Thumbs up for the Kripalu Center! J.
Both sites have the picture of author Elizabeth Gilbert. Kripalu uses her picture, while 1440 has her profile. Seemed interesting.
Not surprising. She's everywhere. Has a course on the MOOC-site, Udemy, too. https://www.udemy.com/elizabeth-gilberts-creativity-workshop/?utm_term=_._pl__._pd__._ti_kwd-615436942_._kw_elizabeth%20gilbert_._&pmtag=6330ed7a-4864-4084-bcc3-f77fceda0857&utm_source=adwords&utm_medium=udemyads&utm_content=_._ag_eg-elizabeth%20gilbert_._ad_171420547352_._de_c_._dm__._lo_9000877_._&k_clickid=2af5fdeb-903a-4e9c-b453-bfef5ee21ebb_408_GOOGLE_NEW-AW-PROS-NONP-PerDev-LizGilbert-EN-ENG_._ci_806626_._sl_ENG_._vi_NONP_._sd_All_._la_EN_.__EG-Elizabeth%20Gilbert_elizabeth%20gilbert_e_171420547352_c&matchtype=e&gclid=CIXR-bLS8tECFcS6wAodU9gBdA&utm_campaign=NEW-AW-PROS-NONP-PerDev-LizGilbert-EN-ENG_._ci_806626_._sl_ENG_._vi_NONP_._sd_All_._la_EN_._ Some time ago, Ms. Gilbert was named one of the "100 Most Influential People" by Time Magazine. Among several other books, she wrote "Eat, Pray, Love," a New York Times bestseller, which was made into a movie starring Julia Roberts. Her sister also has a successful writing career.
