There are a couple of things these education article writers usually get wrong or don't fully understand. Firstly, for-profits and private, non-profit colleges charge more because they are not subsidized by states and/or local governments. However, ITT Tech's tuition rates were even out of the norm for for-profit schools. Secondly, there is no such thing as accreditation for for-profits and accreditation for non-profits. While ACICS did accredit a very large number of for-profits, it also accredited non-profits. For-profits are also capable of attaining regional accreditation.

The person this article is mostly about, Straub, reminds me of many other students I've come across. They did not do any research. They had no idea that the local community colleges provided similar programs for less. Since ITT Tech mostly offers degrees in high-paying, in-demand fields, they shouldn't have a large number of students struggling to pay back their loans. Unfortunately, their student loan default rate is much higher than average because they actively recruited low-income students and charged them exorbitant tuition rates leading them to take out loans with the school at high interest rates.

    Sad story.

The gov't-education complex at its worse!

Reminds me of the guy who "couldn't get a job at Best Buy with his Everest degree."

even a modicum of research would lead most people to turn away from ITT Tech in favor of nearly any alternative.

One of the issues I have with these post-school failures is how comfortable people are basically saying "why didn't anyone save me from doing something stupid?"
