Very long Bloomberg article this week on a prominent mining consultant, whose opinions are used by many huge companies. Bachelor's degree from Empresarial in Costa Rica, and at least one, perhaps two Doctorates from Stamford Hill, which has been discussed here at some length.

I usually find fake degree stories at least somewhat funny, but considering the possible ramifications that this fake was taken seriously, it's not at all amusing.

I'm usually one to exercise some caution on matters concerning unaccredited degrees. Religious exemption schools for clergy are the big one. This would be one of those examples where the degree fraud may have actually done harm.

    Not at all amusing.

    Dr. Bear,

Have you ever given your opinion of higher education in general? Your books left me with the impression that you were not overawed.

Decimon, my first published article in the world of higher education was in October 1962. I have been writing about this stuff, thus, for 54 years, which means I've probably said something about everything. Probably the most relevant thing to your question, and the thing I've probably said the most, is that if one is satisfied that a given degree (or, I'll add, academic program of any kind) will meet ones needs, then go for it. Or, as my wife's grandmother said, "There's a lid for every pot." For me personally, I'm very glad that things were there when I wanted or needed them, from the PhD program (I'm regularly surprised/pleased by how much of the stuff I learned in my PhD program is still useful) to the YouTube video this morning on how to make my damn iPhone screen turn sideways.
