World Alliance on Distance Education (WADE) collaborates on first global business school program Leading distance universities to offer Internet-based, post-MBA program

    June 13, 2002
Bangkok, Thailand -- Athabasca University's Centre for Innovative Management today announced a world partnership for the development and delivery of a post-MBA International Business Program. The program will be jointly offered by the world's four leading distance universities: Deakin University in Australia, the Hong Kong Open University, the Open University of the UK, and Canada's Athabasca University. The four universities have teamed up to form the World Alliance on Distance Education (WADE) and will together offer an intensive, year-long program for working managers and professionals.

The program will benefit from the proven capability and market presence of the four partners with operations spanning Europe, Asia, Australia and North America. The courses will be strongly group focused, using Internet-based communications technologies to allow participants to work together collaboratively from across the globe. Dr. Peter Carr, Director of Athabasca University's Centre for Innovative Management, launched the new program today while speaking at Global Forum 2002 - the five yearly international gathering of business school deans in Bangkok, Thailand:

"This partnership creates the world's first truly global business school offering. In today's increasingly international business world a program based on interaction between managers from across four continents will be extremely attractive to both individuals and corporations. They will learn first hand about how to do real international business. No other university consortium has the infrastructure or proven online capability to compare to WADE."

Participants in the program will be expected to have an MBA and will study four courses and receive a joint certificate from the four institutions. The program is scheduled to commence in January of 2003.

    oh, wow,
    a post-MBA certificate.
would that count credits towards a PhD or DBA ?
(otherwise it looks pretty useless for me, doesn´t it?)

    Considering Athabasca is involved

I bet it is terribly expensive?

I can make some further inquiries about this, if you like. I know that AU was looking at doctorates in some areas, but this was still "up in the air" the last time that I checked. Logically, if a person does the post-MBA thing with AU and its associates, it should then be transferrable into a DBA or PhD in much the same way that a person can use a AGDM as a segue into the MBA at AU.

Some universities off an "Engineer" degree which is between a masters and a doctorate. Maybe this post-MBA is based on the same idea.

    Expensive?

More than likely it will be an expensiver program. But, the interesting development here, in my view, is that, perhaps, for the first time we have a joint program, designed among four respectable, world class institutions, "accrediting" their "degree" program. What I like about this is that it is truly international in nature--four continents and all. but, it would have made sense for them to include South Africa (may be Unisa) to round off the world, so to speak--(that is, at least, the English speaking world).

I wonder how long it is before they establish a consortium DL Doctorate like the Union Institute once was! An interesting idea.

A post-MBA is a really new thing in the business world. It is mainly designed for an MBA that wants to specialize in a specific field of business, McGill University and York University offer a Post-MBA but they make very clear that the Post-MBA is at the master’s level and not a the PhD level.

There should be some option that allows PGMBA people to convert their studies to a DBA/PhD, if they later decide to go down that route. I mean, these people are putting out a significant amount of cabbage for their studies, so it's only fair that they are allowed to get the maximum amount of mileage for their investment.

    Regards,

    Darren.

If you find one university that takes a Post-MBA as part of your DBA let me know, I have a Post-MBA and I'm working towards a DBA and didn't receive any credit for it. Most of the places that I applied didn't even understand the Post-MBA, few people know the difference between a Post MBA and an MBA.

I agree that it would have been a good idea to have Unisa added to the list for the (nearly) all continents English language approach. As well, there is an opportunity to complete the MBA through DL at the Université de Moncton all in French if anyone was interested.Université de Moncton
