I had a friend freshman year of high school and our parents had differing philosophies. Mine told me that if got anything less than the honor roll they'd ground/murder me (with multiple regular assurances from my father that his 22 year police career gave him ample education in the art of getting away with murder). His told him that colleges couldn't care less about your high school freshman year grades. Guess which of us pulled a higher GPA that year?

Telling students that their first semester, effectively, "doesn't count" is probably not going to help students get up to speed faster. My guess would be it would have the opposite effect in many situations.
