Hi all, I am 55 and trying to finish a bachelor degree. Not sure what degree. No VA money for me because I am 100% and during the veap era. but I do qualify for pell and tap (NY resident).

I was enrolled in Thomas Edison about 10 years back.

I am thinking of maybe Suny Empire or excelsior?
Thinking of Saylor tests or cleps?
Should I go the financial aid route and test out at the same time as a full load of online classes.
wow just dont know where to start.

    Some history:
I have a 66 credits from Community College of the AF in electronics. I was a computer/electronics weapons control tech from 78 to 82.

took english comp 1 at NMU
took a tech math class and intro to literature at local community college.
passed english comp 2 and 2 sociology/psychology exams at TESU

Personal: was an business owner most of my life. 2 pet stores, 3 contracting companies and martial arts school. wrote and published 2 books. half way decent self taught PHP programmer.

First off, welcome to the board, and thank you for your service!

Is there some reason why you aren't considering a return to Thomas Edison? They're usually the most liberal in accepting transfer credits (past coursework, exams, portfolio, etc.) and have a wide selection of majors/concentrations.

What major or concentration interests you, and are you able to travel to a test center for CLEP, DANTES, etc.?

If you're looking for state aid from New York, then I can understand why you're looking at New York colleges. If you're not getting a grant from New York, then you might want to consider getting an evaluation from Charter Oak State College, Excelsior College, and Thomas Edison State University to see which one will put you closer to a degree.

Hello, Welcome... it's nice to see you've made up your mind to complete your degree!
+1, I agree with doing an evaluation with the Big 3 as well, especially TESU since you were with them before.
You can also do a PLA (Prior Learning Assessment) for credit at TESU, it takes time but for cheap $379/12 credits.

Furthermore, you're more than half way there. You might want to get that initial evaluation from TESU and see what courses/credits are missing and what the academic advisers have recommended. Then create a spreadsheet for cross referencing what needs to be done and what has been complete. Use that as a progress tracker as well to move forward.

There's a few links from Sanantone on this previous thread from a day ago. Very good diydegree plans in place.

As mentioned, I think it's time to decide on your major/concentration, get a degree outline, start plugging in your credits already earned, and develop a plan to fill the gaps. The only major hurdle I see is that your computer credits from CCAF are likely too old to be directly accepted in transfer.

This is a good point about computer credits. Therefore, it would be a good idea to find the most liberal transfer policy possible for the degree sought, and to carefully weigh the degree goal against the transferability of the credits. For example, it might turn out to be a good idea to take a different degree if it means getting it done sooner, less expensively, etc. Only the degree seeker can make that call, of course, but it helps to be able to ponder the various possibilities.
